I'm a Licensed Architect and Construction Division head for an Air Force base in Massachusetts. I am a Marine Corps veteran with a marketing and public affairs background. I currently have a BA in Proj. Mgmt. and a Masters in Architecture. I am interested in a MBA to tie all my skillsets together into a complete package with hopes of going into consulting.

Business schools like military applicants because they are good at execution and proactive and negative stuff done. As a woman in the military, you would be a fairly underrepresented minority in the business school.

My recommendation would be to consider a number of programs consulting recruiting is not as dependent on the school brand as long as you are in the top 15 programs. Some programs that are not even in the top 10 are well known as good feeder schools for consulting such as Darden for example.

Even with a slightly lower than average GMAT score, I feel you have a decent chance in the top 10.

Would also recommend getting in touch with folks from https://www.service2school.org/ they have put a number of folks into BSchools.

Fellow Vet here (Army); you have a stellar GPA but maybe have some room for improvement in your GMAT if you’re solely targeting HBS. Have you considered the GRE? For a consulting career, your test score will be important in recruiting.

With your WE, I think your profile will stand out if you find a way to quantify your experiences into measurable attributes. Would recommend Service2School as well, my ambassador was really helpful in turning my experiences into recognizable measurables for my resume. If you’re heading for MA, have you considered Sloan, CBS, or Stern as well?

I am continuing to study to increase my GMAT score. I think I've done a pretty good job drafting my resume to quantify my experiences. My biggest struggle right now in preparing for applications is forming my "narrative" for essays.

Thanks for sharing your profile! As mentioned about, GPA is solid (and in changeable at this point, so more or less rounds down range) but a few extra points on the GMAT will go a long way.

In addition to Service to School, I’d recommend reaching out to the HBS AFAA. The veterans there truly want to see other veterans succeed and are more than happy to help with application strategy, giving their own 2 cents, and answering any specific questions you may have.

Schools do like veterans, and will be comparing your application to the other veterans applying. Really look for ways to make yours stand out against someone with a comparable employment profile.
