Hi @WaterCadet ! Your profile stands out due to its unique international experience in the shipping industry, leadership roles, and impactful extracurriculars. With a 730 GMAT score and a decent GPA of 3.3, your academic credentials are competitive for top schools. However, transitioning from a niche field like transportation to consulting requires demonstrating transferable skills, leadership, and strategic thinking in your application. Your work with the Robinhood Army and teaching underprivileged kids add depth and a strong sense of social responsibility to your profile.

For schools like HEC Paris, INSEAD, IESE, Oxford, and NUS, focus on articulating how your global exposure, operational expertise, and problem-solving abilities will add value to their programs. Additionally, clarify your motivation for switching to consulting and how your MBA goals align with the resources at these schools. To increase your chances, continue developing your French language skills (especially for HEC and INSEAD), strengthen your consulting narrative with concrete examples, and secure strong, personalized recommendation letters. Please take a look at BLOG1 and BLOG2.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a 1:1 call with you to learn more about your profile and provide a detailed evaluation and gauge your chances to the best-fit schools. Please feel free to schedule a profile evaluation call according to your convenience.

HI WaterCadet,

what I like about your profile is the range of ECAs- i haven't seen many ECAs in resume of applicants like you (are you in merchant navy?).
The work experience looks good and when you begin to compile your applications, you must focus upon the leadership opportunities and your achievements therein. Your target b-schools value international experience, so you must bring forth how you learnt to adapt, become culturally sensitive and excel in working in multi-dimensional teams through your experiences.
The career shift to consulting sounds reasonable, and you can also explore operations roles as an alternate career goal. Given how slow the job market has been (consulting too), it will be worthwhile to do school specific research for every target program to understand which recruiters are hiring. That information can eventually help build a stronger goals essay (Oxford asks several questions about your intended industry/ role/ geography in their application).
