Hi @Amav
Thanks for sharing your profile!

First and foremost, you make a unique applicant given your Military & Defense background. But when you juxtapose this against your post-MBA plan which is to work in the Diversified Financial Services sector, your profile is like a double-edged sword unless the transition narrative is cohesive and you can show transferable skills. For this, we would need to understand if you have taken up responsibilities where you had to make strategic decisions, manage risks for operations, or have even remotely handled finance-related or cross-functional projects within defense (budgets, procurement, vendor negotiation) in your tenure. You need to connect the dots without which you won’t stand a good chance. If you don’t have any direct finance exposure, then you should consider pursuing some financial modelling certifications, attempting the CFA L1 exam, or gaining practical exposure to finance through internships, projects, or self-initiated finance-related initiatives. Also, your goals, have to be defined and your career progression should be expressed via short- and long-term plans. This should also build on your military experience so that there is logical progression.

Moving on to your academics, 86.6% is a good score but the 625 GMAT Focus score is an issue as its below the median for LBS, INSEAD, and IESE. You will have to push to a 680-710+ range.

We also recommend adding schools like Warwick Business School, HEC Paris, ESCP Business School, etc. for better chances.

We’d love to offer a 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your portfolio, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!

Thanks for sharing, Amav.

I'd like to understand your work-ex better to assess. A military/defense background can stand out well, especially if you can highlight leadership, high-stakes decision-making, and cross-functional experience.

Transitioning into finance will need a clear story: why the shift, and how your current skills translate to your post-MBA goals.

Academically, the GPA is strong, especially if backed by a strong undergrad institution. The GMAT Focus score of 625 may limit options at LBS, INSEAD, and even IESE/ ISB. A retake could help: target 675+ to stay competitive at these schools.

Your school list makes sense given your preference for 1-year programs and international exposure. Some more schools to consider could be HEC Paris and Oxbridge.

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Thanks for sharing your profile @Amav. You bring a unique and compelling background to the MBA applicant pool, with 4 years of experience in the Military & Defense sector, a field that consistently produces strong candidates due to its emphasis on leadership, discipline, and high-stakes decision-making. Your academic performance is good, with an impressive GPA of 86.6%, and while your GMAT Focus score of 625 is slightly below average for some top-tier programs, your leadership potential and differentiated experience can still make you a strong contender, if the rest of your application is crafted strategically. We’ve had the privilege of working with exceptional candidates from military backgrounds who successfully gained admission to top B-schools, many with scholarships. You can take a look at one of the success stories.

Your target schools, ISB, LBS, INSEAD, and IESE, are good choices, particularly for career switchers like yourself. Schools like ISB and IESE value leadership-driven profiles and applicants from non-traditional industries. However, for LBS and INSEAD, your current score may be a bit on the lower side. That said, a retake aiming for 675+ would improve your competitiveness significantly, especially if you’re aiming for scholarships or a place at the most selective programs.

Your military background likely involved managing people, resources, and operations, skills highly transferable to your post-MBA goal of working in finance, particularly within diversified financial services. If you can demonstrate exposure to budgeting, procurement, logistics, or operations, and draw connections to your desired pivot into finance, your application can make a compelling case. Additionally, any experiences with international deployments or cross-functional projects should be highlighted, as they’ll resonate with global programs like INSEAD and IESE.

To strengthen your career narrative, try to be specific about your post-MBA goals within finance. Are you aiming for roles in investment banking, asset management, fintech, or corporate finance? Schools want to see not just ambition but also clarity and realism. If you haven’t already, consider engaging in finance-focused online certifications (like Coursera, CFA Level 1 prep) to demonstrate your commitment to the industry switch.

Start early with your resume, identify recommenders now, and begin outlining your essays, especially focusing on why MBA, why now, and why finance. We’d love to learn more about your journey. If you’d like, feel free to book a personalized profile evaluation session.

Cheers!

Hi Amav
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, a military background looks strong. You will have to highlight your leadership and decision-making skills to strengthen your profile. Your GPA is decent, but your GMAT looks on the lower side, are you open for a retake? Try aiming for a score close to 705 or above.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for top MBA programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances— happy to help!
