Thanks for sharing your profile @Mayank Agrawal ! You’re in the sweet spot for top 2-year MBA programs: 5 years is the canonical amount of pre-MBA experience many US / top global schools want, and your corporate governance + compliance + founding your own compliance venture can be differentiators for consulting, provided you (a) signal quantitative readiness and (b) convert domain work into clear business impact and leadership stories.

How Adcoms can read your profile: Ideal work experience(average class experience at top MBA programs typically ~4-6 years). 67% BCom is lower than typical US GPA conversions, you must contextualize (rigor of program, ranking of college, any grade-curve explanation) and offset it with other signals (GMAT, professional qualifications). Company Secretary qualification + startup/own business = credibility on compliance, governance, entrepreneurship, and stakeholder management, all attractive to consulting firms. Emphasize measurable outcomes (clients served, revenue, savings, process efficiency). Consulting recruiting expects analytical readiness. Admissions will expect a strong GMAT/GRE or demonstrable quantitative coursework. If you don’t show this, top programs may worry about your ability to handle core analytics/cases.

Stanford, Wharton, Columbia, Booth (very competitive, upper range): These schools admit fewer applicants and expect exceptional leadership, high quant scores, and a crisp global narrative.

Target (good fit, if you hit GMAT FE 675+ and craft a consulting narrative): Kellogg, Haas, UCLA Anderson, Fuqua, Tuck, Darden, Stern (NYU).

Safety/Practical (alternatives): ISB, Marshall, Goizueta. These can be good balance choices if you want Asia/US regional options.

Note: Booth/Columbia/Wharton can sit in both Reach and Target depending on your GMAT and leadership evidence.

Get a nice GMAT score. Take one graded corporate finance/accounting/statistics course and add the certificate/transcript to your application. This helps convert a commerce degree into visible analytical readiness. Translate CS work into consulting stories: extract 3-4 STAR examples showing problem framing, hypothesis testing, stakeholder influence, and measurable impact (cost savings, compliance risk reduction %, revenue protected, number of clients transitioned). Choose recommenders who can quantify leadership & business impact (a client you helped, a senior manager, or co-founder). Get consulting exposure, or an internal strategy project will prove fit for consulting recruiters.

Questions:
1. Have you taken an official GMAT diagnostic or an official practice test? If yes, what is the score and sectional breakdown?
2. What are the exact, quantifiable metrics from your roles?
3. Have you worked on any strategy / operational projects (even internally) that resemble consulting deliverables?
4. Preferred post-MBA geography for consulting (India only, US, Europe, global)?

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experiences, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

Hi Mayank
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, I see a pretty unique background coming from corporate law and governance, not a super common pre-MBA path, which can actually help you stand out if you position it well.

Having founded your own compliance venture is a big plus, especially if you can show client growth, leadership and measurable impact. For consulting post-MBA, that entrepreneurial and regulatory experience can translate well into strategy and risk advisory roles. Right now, what’s missing are details like your GMAT/GRE score and more on extracurriculars /community involvement. AdComs like to see well-rounded candidates beyond just work.

Your academics are fine, but you’ll need to balance that undergrad with strong test scores and clear career goals. If you can tighten your narrative (why consulting, why now) and show impact through your venture, you’ll be competitive.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.
