I have experience in corporate law, political consulting and now public policy. Initially my post-MBA goals indicated wanting to go towards PE/VC but I added more nuance by indicating short term goals as consulting in other application and eventually moving to VC or entrepreneurship in later applications

Thanks for sharing your profile, @adityabr123. Your profile can be competitive, but it may also be on the borderline for top schools. Your 675 GMAT Focus + 4 yrs of diverse public-sector/policy/law experience makes you interesting, but to convert at ISB/INSEAD/LBS/Booth/Harvard/Haas, you must tighten impact metrics and sell a single, believable career arc (policy > consulting > VC/entrepreneurship).

About the school selection. ISB can be a target, as it is a strong fit for public-sector/leadership narratives.
INSEAD/LBS can be a target/stretch, good if you show international ambition & quant ability.
Booth/Haas can be a stretch, but it needs stronger quant/examples of business impact.
HBS can be a stretch, as it is very selective for 4-yr candidates; it requires standout leadership + story.

Things you shall do: Craft a single coherent story, pick one convincing short-term role (Consulting) and show exactly how public policy + law > makes you the right hire for consulting and later VC/entrepreneurship. Quantify the impact by converting each bullet into metrics (%, $ impact, people, scope). For LORs, select 2 recommenders who can compare you to peers and quantify leadership/impact. For each school, use 2-3 school-specific hooks (course/club/faculty/recruiter) in your “Why X” essay.

Question for you to reflect upon: Which geography do you want post-MBA (India / US / Europe)?

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experiences, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. Recently, most of the LBS applicants who worked with Shantanu(INSEAD Alumnus, Founder, and Admissions Consultant, MBA and Beyond) received Interview Invites.

You can take a look at the latest LBS, HEC & IESE Essay Workshop video on YouTube, which might be insightful.

If you’re working on your essay drafts and would like an expert review, feel free to book a session.

You can also register for our Upcoming ESSAY WORKSHOP on Haas, MIT & Cornell. Craft essays that shine: pick powerful stories, match your goals with each school, and showcase authentic leadership. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS

Hi @adityabr123
Thanks for reaching out.

With experiences across corporate law, political consulting and public policy, your work experience is the USP of your profile if you package it right. In your application, make sure that your frame your experiences across these three domains into one coherent narrative. Emphasize your business-related impact or achievements and how you’ve scaled in your career so far.

You haven’t specified your GPA so please mention that. As for your GMAT score, 675 is below the competitive mark for most schools you’re targeting with the exception of ISB and to an extent Oxford Said. It’s best if you retake the GMAT and try to secure a 695+ so you can apply to those top-tier schools you’re aiming. If you can’t retake the GMAT, then you can consider updating your school list with those that align with your current score.

Now about your goals, if consulting, then your public policy and political consulting background can be positioned as a niche strength for government-facing practices, public sector units of firms, or crossroads of regulation and industry. But if it’s the PE/VC sector, then you must know these are high-barrier sectors so if you have any relevant experience to these areas then please highlight them. You also specified entrepreneurship, so what’s your idea here and what’s going to be your venture’s value creation?

We’d love to offer a free 1-on-1 profile evaluation to dive deeper into your strengths, discuss more about your profile, talk through your fit across schools, and co-create a tailored application game plan!
