Hello, I am currently looking to apply for an MBA. I am a former division 1 baseball player and played 2 years of professional baseball in Japan. Right now I am transitioning to my family business, where I plan to succeed it in the future. I want to build a great network and foundation on management and finance.

Perhaps it would be worth completing your transition to a family business and gaining another two years of work experience. Getting into PE post-MBA generally requires one to come from that industry PE - give this a thought too.

Thanks for sharing your profile, @Kaito Hara. Your profile is non-traditional but appealing. MBA programs value elite athletes and leadership backgrounds, especially when paired with a clear family-business transition plan.

Your biggest advantage is a compelling life story, but your biggest risk is limited traditional business work experience.

Your strengths:
1. Elite athletic background- Division 1 + professional sports signals discipline, leadership, resilience, and coachability. Business schools like former athletes because they contribute strongly to classroom culture.

2. International experience- Playing professionally in Japan demonstrates adaptability, cultural awareness, and maturity.

Concerns:
1. Work experience (main risk)- You will likely have ~3 years total experience at matriculation, which is on the lower side.

This is acceptable if: leadership examples are strong and the family business role is clearly defined.

2. Finance/Quant preparation- Since your goal involves finance and ownership, admissions may ask, do you have analytical preparation? Your GPA is fine, but any finance exposure helps.

Round 3 is more competitive, so execution matters.

Your narrative can be: Athlete → leadership mindset → international exposure → business ownership.

Avoid saying you just want a “network.” Better framing can be: I want to build financial and strategic capabilities to scale my family business and modernize its operations. Schools like owners, operators, and builders.

You can also explore other schools such as SMU Cox and Vanderbilt Owen.

How to strengthen your profile: Gain early responsibility in the family business, operations, finance, and strategy. Take a finance or accounting course.

Focus on programs with strong alumni in Texas if the family business is regional.

Questions for you to reflect upon:
1) What industry is your family business in?
2) How many employees or what revenue scale?
3) What role will you hold before MBA matriculation?
4) Do you have a GMAT/GRE score planned?
5) Did you hold leadership roles on your baseball team?

We’d love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, work experience, and personal journey so that we can provide a tailored profile evaluation and an honest school assessment. Feel free to book an evaluation session.

Cheers!
