A. Despite the gains made by American women in recent decades, the median salary of women is still only about 78% of that of a man

As per your perception, let us replace ‘that’ with the median salary of a woman
Despite the gains made by American women in recent decades, the median salary of women is still only about 78% of (that) the median salary of a woman of a man
What fruitful meaning does the edited sentence convey?

Opp sorry, I mean that refers to the median salary.

It would be the median salary of women is still only about 78% of (that) the median salary of a man
So this sentence compares the median salary of a women with the median salary of a man.

Please read that again. A compares the median salary of women(plural) with that of a man(singular); That is why I called it not equal

Can I choose A if the choice was "the median salary of woman" ?

In (A), "that" refers to "salaray".

the median salary of women is still only about 78% of that [salary] of a man.

What is wrong in (A). Hard to buy the argument in previous posts.

I'm not convinced that any of these choices are valid. How can one person (a man or a woman) have a median salary? The median salary should be applied to the group: women or men. I can refer to "a woman's average salary" or even "the median salary for a woman," since this suggests that we are talking about the median for all people in the group, but the constructions here don't work.

A – ‘salary of women’ is being compared to ‘median salary of a man’
B – changes the sentence to mean despite gains made in just the last decade, rather than over the multiple decades.
C – ‘gain’ is singular, while ‘decades’ is plural.
D – ‘78% of that of a man’ is redundant.
E – correct by PoE
