Pre Analysis:
- We are asked if \(P_{1975}-P_{1965}<20\% \text{ of } P_{1965}\)
\(⇒P_{1975}-P_{1965}<\frac{20}{100}\times P_{1965}\)
\(⇒P_{1975}-P_{1965}<\frac{P_{1965}}{5}\)
\(⇒5P_{1975}-5P_{1965}<P_{1965}\)
\(⇒5P_{1975}<6P_{1965}\) - So, we are basically asked if \(5P_{1975}<6P_{1965}\) or not
Statement 1: The population of Country S in 1965 was 180 million
- According to this statement, \(P_{1965}=180M\)
- This is not enough to say if \(5P_{1975}<6P_{1965}\) or not
- Thus, statement 1 alone is not sufficient and we can eliminate options A and D
Statement 2: The population of Country S in 1975 was 1.17 times what it was in 1965
- According to this statement, \(P_{1975}=1.17P_{1965}\)
- We need to see if \(5P_{1975}<6P_{1965}\)
\(⇒5\times 1.17P_{1965}<6P_{1965}\) - We will be able to answer this with a YES or a NO and there is no need of an actual calculation here
- Thus, statement 2 alone is sufficient
