During an experiment, Emily collected 11 different temperature readings, all of which were integers. How many of the temperature readings were negative?

1) The median temperature reading was -1.
2) Exactly five of the temperature readings were positive.

Solution:-

Please make note of the following key points:-
11 different temperature readings, all of which were integers
This clearly indicates that all the readings were unique and all are integers.

Statement 1:-

1) The median temperature reading was -1.

The median is -1. Since no value is same, -1 is not repeated. Besides the next integer after -1 has to be greater than equal to zero.(none negative). Since -1 is median, all the values to the left of the median are smaller than -1 (hence all negative). This we have only 6 negative values.
Sufficient.

Statement 2:-
2) Exactly five of the temperature readings were positive.

Hence the median here will be less than or equal to zero.We do not know about the median here. If the median is zero, then we 5 negative readings. If the median is less than zero (negative) then we have 6 negative readings.

Insufficient.

Hence the answer is Option A.
