Struck between C and D.

This sentence has following issues:
1. Modifier issue
2. Pronoun issue

(A) Africa, before colonization, had a long history of independence that was interrupted [ “before colonization” refers time, it cannot modify “Africa” – Eliminate it]
(B) Africa, before colonization, had had a long history of independence with an interruption [ “before colonization” refers time, it cannot modify “Africa” – Eliminate it]

(C) Africa had had, before colonization, a long history of independence that was interrupted
[Again Modifier issue - "before colonization" modifies what? ]
(D) Africa had had a long history of independence, one that was interrupted by colonization
[Pronoun “one” modifies independence – OK]
(E) Africa, before colonization interrupted it, had a long history of independence [modifier issue – “before colonization” refers time, it cannot modify “Africa” and pronoun reference issue - “it” can refer colonization/ acknowledgement – Eliminate it]

Answer: D
