AB = 17

St1: ABC = 9 : SUFF

St2: Let x = Only A and y = ABC
Then x = 25-16-18+y
so x = y-9
max value of y could be 16. So ABC could vary from 9 to 16.: INSUFF

Set A, B, C have some elements in common. if 16 elements are in both A and B, 17 elements are in both A and C, and 18 elements are in both B and C, how many elements do all three of the sets A, B, and C have in common?

1). of the 16 elements that are in both A and B, 9 elements are also in C

2). A has 25 elements, B has 30 elements, and C has 35 elements.

Can anybody help out this one. Thanks


For 3 Venn diag we have
A +B+C-[AB+BC+AC] + ABC
Qstem = AB=16, BC=18, AC=17

(2) We know A, B,C We can find ABC

But, agreed, stmt (2) also let's us find out ABC. Hence answer should be (D).

AUBUC is A + B + C - (AB + BC + CA) + ABC

AB, BC and CA also include elements that are common to all 3.
For instance, if an element figures in all sets A, B and C it will definitely figure in AB, in BC and in CA.

Therefore, if it is subtracted thrice, one has to add it back once.
