Quote:
In general, people support cuts in government spending until they discover that it will affect their own day-to-day lives quite practically.

(A) it will affect

(B) it would affect

(C) the cuts will affect

(D) the cuts’ affects will be on

(E) it will have an affect on

The right answer here is C. This is a relatively straightforward question that tests our use of pronouns.

Options A, B, E - What will affect people's day to day lives? It is the cuts in spending, which is a plural noun idea. Hence, the use of the word 'it' here is incorrect. OUT

Option D - "the cuts' affects" is not the correct subject here, since the verb associated with it is just "be", suggesting that the affects will just exist, rather than impact people's lives. OUT

Hence, answer option C is CORRECT.

It is better to use the verb form rather than the noun form for clarity and concision.

The cuts will affect their lives. - Direct, short & sweet
Verb - will affect

The cuts' effects will be on their lives. - Indirect and wordy
Noun - effects. There is no action and do-er of the action. We are not exactly clear what it means to say.

The cuts' affects will be on their lives. - Incorrect (This is option (D))

The noun is 'effects,' not 'affects'. Affect is a verb in this context.

So option (D) is incorrect.
