Quote:
Helen’s mother was recovering at the hospital when she suffered a second fatal attack.
A. when she suffered a second fatal attack
B. but then suffered a second fatal attack
C. when she suffered a second and fatal attack
D. and then suffered a second fatal attack
E. when a second fatal attack was suffered
The right answer here should be
C. There is a purely grammatical way to solve this, but on a time-sensitive exam like the GMAT, you should always be looking for clues to help you arrive at the right answer quickly. In doing so, you must consider the intended meaning of a sentence.
Let's look at
"second fatal attack". An attack (or anything else) is considered fatal if it kills the person/entity it is fatal to. Hence,
it is NOT possible for Helen's mother to have a second fatal attack, because the first one would have killed her. She merely suffered a second attack, one that also happened to be fatal. Immediately, this allows us to
eliminate A, B, D, E, leaving C as the right answer.
