How long did it take Carlos to drive nonstop from his home to Atlanta, Georgia?

Time = distance/Rate

(1) Carlos’s average speed for the trip was 55 miles per hour.

Time = distance/Rate
Time = d/55

We know nothing about the distance.
INSUFFICIENT

(2) If Carlos’s average speed for the trip had been 20 percent faster, the trip would’ have taken 3 hours.
time = distance/rate
3 = d/1.2r
3.6r = d

t=d/r
t = 3.6r/r
t = 3.6

SUFFICIENT

20 percent faster means (rate) + 0.2*(rate) = 1.2*(rate).

Does this make sense?

1 is clearly insufficient.

2. let's give some letters for rate, time distance.
RT = D, where R=rate, T=time, D=distance.
we are given:
1.2R * (T-3) = RT
1.2RT - 3.6R = RT
3.6R = 0.2RT | divide by R
3.6 = 0.2T
we can find T. sufficient.

T=3.6/0.2 = 18 hours.

B is the answer.
