There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
My first post here (well second first was surely in the wrong location). I've struggled for 60+ hours on SC and finally think I am making progress but I'm not sure how to gauge how I am doing? The GMAT pill for SC (the only pill I purchased) has been a great help and I'm working through it. I'm pushing for a 700+. Quant is at 48 (might get up to 50 but unlikely) and more importantly verbal is at 34.
I seem to be inconsistent on the SC. I can get 60% of 700+ questions correct but then get several 600 and 500 questions wrong in the mix. Speed is okay on them but could be faster and I hope it to imrpove with more practice.
I suppose the question is I am asking is; is this inconsistency normal for SC? Getting easier SC questions wrong among getting the more difficult ones right?
Also another question: After much practice I took my final GMATprep. I scored a 34 on the Verbal. Reviewing it, of the last 12 questions I got 10 wrong (3 wrong, 1 right, 3 wrong, 1 right, 6 wrong - in that order). The last 6 were a RC and I had 7 minutes left so I just guessed and didn't get worked up. How much damage was done to my score in butchering the last 10 questions like that and particularly the last 6?
Is there a quick way to gauge where I am in my SC progress? I'm looking for 38+ in my verbal and have about 3 weeks to go til I take the GMAT.
This forum is invaluable and I thank all the people for contributing. I hope I can help someone out in due course.
Cheers,
Matt

What separates a 500-600 level SC problem from a 700+ problem is more than I care to think about. I suppose some traps are easier to spot than others. Here's what I would focus on:
1.) How much time am I spending on SC questions? If it's over 90 seconds, can I speed up on these or should I guess on one or two to save time?
2.) Why am I getting these questions wrong? What topics am I missing the most (e.g., parallelism, subject-verb agreement, pronoun ambiguity, idioms, etc.)? Do I understand the explanations for the questions I got wrong? Should I make flashcards for the concepts I missed or should I ask a question on the forum?
It's hard to let some questions go and guess, but almost everyone has to in order not to feel rushed on the last few problems. My only other recommendation is to put aside the GMAT Pill and just focus on OG problems and GMAT Prep tests for the next few weeks.
Thanks Sterling. Yeah I need to guess on a couple. The running out of time in the GMAt prep was down to losing discipline on 2 questions one CR and one SC. The SC went to over 3 minutes until I caught myself.
As for the explanations on SC questions I have no issue with why I get something wrong. The explanations make perfect sense. Hence, my frustration with being inconsistent. I'd just like to try and get an idea of where I am at now. Am I at 610, 650, 680...
Anybody know of a way of estimating? Is there a diagnostic timed test anywhere on SC?

Even if there was such a diagnostic test, I don't see how it would be helpful. The scoring algorithm is designed to take all the verbal questions into account and SC is mixed in the equation. For example, two students could take the GMAT and get all the CR and RC questions right, but miss all the SC questions, and their scores could be different depending on the order the questions were presented.
I remember reading somewhere that your final score represents the difficulty of questions that you get right 60% of the time. If you're getting more than half of the 700+ SC questions right, you are probably in that range (even if you miss a few 500-600 level questions). I think that is the best answer I can give you. If we all understood how the scoring algorithm worked, than the 700+ scores would drop several percentiles.
