Assuming Delaware cropland acreage in 1982 was 100 acres, then after a 35% drop by 1997, it would have 65 acres. Since Delaware and Maryland had the same cropland acreage in 1997, Maryland also had 65 acres. Given that Maryland experienced a 10% drop from 1982 to 1997, its 1982 cropland acreage would be 65/0.9 ≈ 72 acres. Therefore, in 1982, Delaware (100 acres) had 100/72 ≈ 1.4, or about 40% more cropland acreage than Maryland (72 acres).
