Statement 1:

S^2 > 4

S can equal 3, -3, 4, -4 (and all the decimals / irrational numbers in between) - insufficient

Statement 2:

1/S > 1/3

S can equal 1 or 2 (or again, any decimal / irrational number between 3 and 5, too), but it must be positive. - sufficient

How can answer for this be B?


1/s > 1/3 means s<3

if s<3 there is no gurantee that s > 0

For example
2<3

but 1/2 >1/3 since 0.5 > 0.333


Please let me know if I am faltering somewhere

if s<3 there is no gurantee that s > 0

For example
2<3

but 1/2 >1/3 since 0.5 > 0.333

Please let me know if I am faltering somewhere

ii) 1/s > 1/3 s must be +ve and > 0 SUFF

trivikram, if 1/3 is + ve then any number greater than 1/3 will be +ve .

If its of the form 1/s . 1 is not negative therefore s has to be > 0 .

Here you are assuming that s>0. If s>0, you would need to change the sign
