A. $100,000 B. $125,000 C. $175,000 D. $250,000 E. $375,000 Let total amount be 100 Stocks = 50 Bonds = 20 Real Estate = 15 Remaining = 100  ( 50 + 20 + 15 ) => 15 Now, 15% represents $37,500 So, total amount invested in the portfolio will be 37500/15*100 => $250,000 Answer , must be (D) $250,000

Hi SajjadAhmad, This question can be solved by TESTing THE ANSWERS. From the prompt, we can see that a relatively small percentage of the portfolio is in the last 'category' (money market fund). So if $37,500 is a small piece of the total, and we're asked for the TOTAL of the portfolio, then a quick scan of the answer choices shows that we should look to TEST one of the larger options first. Lets TEST Answer D: $250,000 IF the TOTAL is $250,000, then.... 50% = $125,000 is in stocks 20% = $50,000 is in bonds 15% = $37,500 is in real estate 85% = $212,500, so the rest equals $250,000 $212,500 = $37,500. This is an exact MATCH for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer. As an aside, you can actually avoid that last calculation completely if you recognize that we've already accounted for 85% of the total, so there's only 15% remaining AND we already know what 15% is equal to... since we did that calculation already). Final Answer: GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made, Rich

A. $100,000 B. $125,000 C. $175,000 D. $250,000 E. $375,000 We can let n = the total amount of money, in dollars, invested in the portfolio. We are given that 50% of the money in a certain portfolio was invested in stocks, 20% in bonds, 15% in real estate, and the remaining $37,500 in a money market fund. Thus: 0.5n + 0.2n + 0.15n + 37,500 = n 0.85n + 37,500 = n 37,500 = 0.15n 37,500/0.15 = n 250,000 = n Answer: D
