Took more than 3 minutes to solve this by assuming values in option (a), is there a shorter way to do this question ?

If \(a^m = b^n\), and if \(a \neq b \neq m \neq n\), what is the value of a + b + m + n?

(1) a, b, m and n are all non negative integers less than 10.
(2) \(b^n = 81\).

Given: \(a^m = b^n\), and \(a \neq b \neq m \neq n\)

Asked: What is the value of a + b + m + n?

(1) a, b, m and n are all non negative integers less than 10.
If \(a^m = b^n = 64\)
a=2; m=6; b=4; n= 3; a + b + m + n = 15
If \(a^m = b^n = 81\)
a=3; m=4; b=9; n= 2; a + b + m + n = 18
NOT SUFFICIENT

(2) \(b^n = 81\).
\(a^m = b^n = 81\)
But a & m may be non integers
If a =5; m = log 81/ log 5
NOT SUFFICIENT

Combining (1) & (2)
(1) a, b, m and n are all non negative integers less than 10.
(2) \(b^n = 81\).
\(a^m = b^n = 81= 3^4 = 9^2\)
a = 3; m = 4; b = 9; n=2 ; a + b + m + n = 18
or
a = 9; m = 2; b = 3; n=4 ; a + b + m + n = 18
SUFFICIENT
