A. 0.4
B. 1.16
C. 2.4
D. 4.8
E. 7

We are given that Ken can mine 4 buckets of gold in 5 hours and Sam can mine 4 buckets of gold in 7 hours. Thus, the rate of Ken is 4/5 and the rate of Sam is 4/7.

If they work together for 1.75 hours, they can mine:

(4/5)(1.75) + (4/7)(1.75) = (4/5)(7/4) + (4/7)(7/4) = 7/5 + 1 = 2.4 buckets

Efficiency of Ken is \(\frac{4}{5}\) buckets/Hr
Efficiency of Sam is \(\frac{4}{7}\) buckets/Hr

Combined efficiency of Sam & Ken is \(\frac{4}{5}+\frac{4}{7}\)

Work done in 1.75 Hours is \(\frac{48}{35}\)

So, Work done by both in 1.75 Hours is 1.75*48/35 = 2.4 , Answer must be (C)
