If x is an integer between 27 and 54, what is the value of x?

(1) The remainder when x is divided by 7 is 2.
x = {30,37,44,51}
NOT SUFFICIENT

(2) The remainder when x is divided by 3 is 2.
x = {29,32,35,38,41,44,47,50,53}
NOT SUFFICIENT

(1) + (2)
(1) The remainder when x is divided by 7 is 2.
x = {30,37,44,51}
(2) The remainder when x is divided by 3 is 2.
x = {29,32,35,38,41,44,47,50,53}
x = 44 is common to both sets
SUFFICIENT

(1) The remainder when x is divided by 7 is 2.
(2) The remainder when x is divided by 3 is 2.

Statement 1:
We can rewrite this statement into \(x = 7*i + 2\), where \(i\) is any integer. There are many \(i\)'s that allows x to satisfy 27 < x < 54 so this is insufficient.

Statement 2:
Similar to statement 1, insufficient.

Combined:
Combined, x divided by 21 must have a remainder of 2. Therefore x = 21+2, 42+2, 63+2 and etc... Only x = 42+2 is in range, so this is sufficient.
We can also list out all the possibilities from the individual statements and see only 44 satisfies both.

Proof that when you combine the statements, x = 21*i + 2:
Statement 1 says (x - 2) has a factor of 7. Statement 2 says (x - 2) has a factor of 3. Therefore when we combine statements, we can conclude (x - 2) has a factor of 21. Hence x = 21*i + 2, where i is an integer.
