Since the (x+y)^2 and (x-y)^2 is divisible by 9 => their sum and diff. is also divisible by 9. The diff comes to -4xy => xy is divisible by 9 'coz 4 and 9 have no common prime factors.

Since xy is divisible by 9, it is divisible by 3...SUFF.

By plugging in values both stmts individually seem insufficient and together seem sufficient

St1 : INSUFF- example - With X =5 and Y = 4 ans is NO and with X = 6 and Y = 3 ans is YES.

St2: INSUFF - example - With X =8 and Y = 5 ans is NO and with X = 9 and Y = 3 ans is YES.

Both combined: if two numbers are divisible by a particular number then their sum or difference will also be divisible by that particular number.

So (X+Y)^2 - (X-Y) ^2 = 4XY and 4XY is divisible by 9. So XY is divisible 9 and also 3.
