In a certain conference room each row of chairs has the same number of chairs, and the number of rows is 1 less than the number of chairs in a row. How many chairs are in a row?

1) There is a total of 72 chairs
2) After 1 chair is removed from the last row, there is a total of 17 chairs in the last 2 rows

Since you already got answer through 2) as u chose B, I will solve for 1)

suppose conference room has X rows, so the number of chairs in each row will be X+1.

from 1) we have X(X+1) = 72... or X^2 + X - 72 = 0

solving the quadratic equation we have X = -9 or 8... now -9 is not possible hence X = 8... so 1) is also sufficient.
