Hi,
Between A and E, A wins

A : In a recent study conducted at MIT, scientists discovered that the neurological pathways of the human brain are much more complicated than they(neurological pathways) were previously believed to be - comparison here is correct neurological pathways are compared correctly.

E:In a recent study conducted at MIT, scientists discovered that the neurological pathways of the human brain are much more complicated than they (scientists)had previously believed- comparison is wrong here , neurological pathways are compared with what scientists believed.

Kindly correct me if i'm wrong.

Thanks.
