horizontally integrated companies are compared with vertically integrated companies. increase and control are parallel to each other.

---> Contrast to Vertical integrated companies with ANOTHER company (horizontally integrated companies). So, A, B, and C are out.
--> In D and E, AND between "coverage" and "control/controlled" is called TAG. We can't use "past form of verb(controlled) after infinitive TO. So, we can cross out E safely. In the sense of meaning, COMPANIES are able to do 2 things: 1/ to increase market coverage, and 2/ to control a larger segment of the industry.
