In Jonathan's pen there are 300 sheep's. 5/6 of the sheep's are white, 2/3 of the sheep's have soft wool. What can't be the number of white sheep's that also have
soft wool in the pen?

A. 100.
B. 200.
C. 190.
D. 180.
E. 160.

Total sheep = 300
White sheep = 250
Soft wool sheep = 200

We have to find the range of the overlap i.e. the minimum and maximum value of 'Both.'
The maximum value of Both is simply 200 (when the soft wool circle is inside the white sheep circle.
Both varies with Neither. It takes the minimum value when Neither = 0

300 = 250 + 200 - Both
Both = 150

So Both varies from 150 to 200 and cannot take a value of 100.

The answer is A as sum of all non-white sheep would total to only 50 whereas plugging in 100 in both white+softwool category would result in a negative number under sheep with neither white color nor soft wool . Attached matrix workings for this overlapping problem.

Softwool............................................................................ 2/3×300 =200

Not softwool ......................................................................300-200=100


................................5/6 ×300= 250...........300-250=50..........Total = 300

As per the matrix it's obvious that the number of white sheep with Softwool cannot be 100. As this would lead to a value of 100 for black sheep with softwool, an impossible consequence as per the matrix.

Therefore A is the correct answer.
