In most Western countries, parents use medicinal pills to help their children overcome simple viral illnesses such as the flu. These pills help the children overcome the flu, but they also have the effect of preventing the immune system from dealing with the viruses themselves, thus not allowing the immune system to fully develop. It is estimated that an immune system that hasn’t had to handle simple viral diseases such as the flu will be unable to deal with lethal viral diseases such as Ebola, smallpox or the Dengue virus. Therefore, by giving children pills to handle simple diseases, parents are actually harming them.

Which of the following would be most useful to determine in order to evaluate the argument above?

A. What the most common pills against viral illnesses such as the flu are.
B. Whether the infant mortality rates for children in the West are higher now relative to what they were in the past.
C. Whether the lethal viral diseases mentioned are found in Western countries.
D. What percentage of parents in Western countries actually give their children pills
E. Whether new pills will be developed that will both defeat simple illnesses and aid the development of the immune system.

C...

Conclusion = By giving pills for simple diseases parents are causing harm..

C is telling that what if the diseases are not present. In this case the pills won't cause any harm.

+1 for C

Conclusion: By giving children pills to handle simple diseases, parents are actually harming them.
Premise: It is estimated that an immune system that hasn’t had to handle simple viral diseases such as the flu will be unable to deal with lethal viral diseases such as Ebola, smallpox or the Dengue virus

What if the lethal viral diseases are not present in western countries. Then there is no harm, as immune system would not face those lethal viruses.

A. What the most common pills against viral illnesses such as the flu are.
-Incorrect. Types of pills is irrelevant
B. Whether the infant mortality rates for children in the West are higher now relative to what they were in the past.
- Incorrect. Infant mortality rate doesn't matter here. Irrelevant
C. Whether the lethal viral diseases mentioned are found in Western countries.
- Correct. As per our pre thinking, this is important to know.
D. What percentage of parents in Western countries actually give their children pills
- Incorrect. % of people taking pills is not in question. People taking pills are harmed or not in the question.
E. Whether new pills will be developed that will both defeat simple illnesses and aid the development of the immune system.
- Incorrect. New pills? Not in question. Irrelevant

I beg to differ.
If the answer to C is YES then the conclusion is strengthened.
If the answer to C is NO then does that mean the conclusion is weakened ?
If the lethal virus is not found in the west then that doesn't necessarily mean that parents are not necessarily harming their kids by giving them pills.
What if the child contracts this viral infection in Africa or Asia ?
This case should weaken the conclusion but it is strengthening it.

First question you can ask yourself is
Does Africa come under western country category ?
Yes = Then as per C, the lethal viral diseases mentioned are not found in Africa (Western country).
No = Then it is irrelevant as we are talking about western countries.

Hope this is clear!

Official Explanation:

We’ll look for an answer that helps us estimate whether the overall effect of giving children pills against simple viruses is positive or negative.
(A) is irrelevant – whatever the pills are, we’re looking for their effect.
(B) doesn’t really interest us – since we wish to compare the effect of the pills later in the child’s life.
(C) is an important piece of information; since the downside of using these pills is making the children vulnerable to serious diseases, it’s essential to find out whether these diseases even exist in the countries where children receive the pills. This is what we’re looking for!
(D) The argument is about those parents who do give pills, whatever their percentage is.
(E) could be important in the future, but the argument is about parents who give their children pills today – not relevant!

I really beg to differ on this one. My question to the author is:
Just becausethe diseases dont happen in americas, does not really mean that they will never happen. I mean this is what the argument is about, that these diseases may happen in future and the immunity system of childrean will not be fully developed by then.
