In the number 1.4ab5, a and b represent single positive digits. If x = 1.4ab5, what is the value of 10 – x?

(1) If x is rounded to the nearest hundredth, then 10 – x = 8.56.

(2) If x is rounded to the nearest thousandth, then 10 – x = 8.564.
B

x = 1.4ab5

St1: x = 1.44 when rouunded off to nearest hundredth.
a = 3 or 4
if a = 3 then b >=5
if a = 4 then b < 5: INSUFF

St2: x = 1.436 when rounded to the nearest thousandth.
a = 3
b = 5
so x = 1.4355
10 -x = 8.5645 :SUFF


I agree with your answer. I did a mistake in my second condition.

PS_Dahiya, I don't agree with your answer "B". I think the answer is "E".

How can you say that 1.436 means a = 3 and b = 5. The question says that it has been rounded to 1000th digit i.e 1.436.

1.431 to 1.435 can be rounded to 1.436, as the last digit is 5.

Am I missing something here?

a could be 3 when b>=5 Hence x = 1.4355 or x= 1.4365 etc

a could be 4 when b< 5 Hence x = 1.4405 or x= 1.4415 etc
