1) the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and used that to calculate the size of Earth. "That" is ambiguous. also "that" should be used for original copy.
2)the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and made use of it in the calculation of the size of Earth. Too much wordy
3) the French astronomer Jean Picard made the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian and used it to calculate the size of Earth. Only sentence which removes all errors
4) the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian was made by the French astronomer Jean Picard, and he used that to calculate the size of Earth. stmt after comma should refer to the subject doing the action incorrect
5) the length of a degree of a meridian was first accurately measured by the French astronomer Jean Picard, who calculated the size of Earth with it. stmt after comma should refer to the subject doing the action incorrect

Re: In the seventeenth century, the French astronomer Jean Picard [#permalink]
In the seventeenth century, the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and used that to calculate the size of Earth.

1>the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and used that to calculate the size of Earth. Wrong
2>the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and made use of it in the calculation of the size of Earth. Wrong - made use of it - unecessarily wordy(?)
3>the French astronomer Jean Picard made the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian and used it to calculate the size of Earth. Correct - 'it' correctly refers the the measurement of the meridian
4>the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian was made by the French astronomer Jean Picard, and he used that to calculate the size of Earth. Wrong
5>the length of a degree of a meridian was first accurately measured by the French astronomer Jean Picard, who calculated the size of Earth with it. Wrong

Can someone please explain why is choice A not correct.

Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure is more logical than Jean Picard first measured..

1>the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and used that to calculate the size of Earth.
it would be a better reference to the measure of the length than that therefore out

2>the French astronomer Jean Picard became the first person to accurately measure the length of a degree of a meridian and made use of it in the calculation of the size of Earth.
made use of it is akward usage and doesn't convey the right meaning

3>the French astronomer Jean Picard made the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian and used it to calculate the size of Earth.
it reference is spot on and the meaning is also perfect therefore let us hang on to it

4>the first accurate measurement of the length of a degree of a meridian was made by the French astronomer Jean Picard, and he used that to calculate the size of Earth.
Similar reasoning as A

5>the length of a degree of a meridian was first accurately measured by the French astronomer Jean Picard, who calculated the size of Earth with it.
The usage of who twice is redudant since it's known the French astronomer had already done it

Therefore IMO C
