Is the integer N divisible by 36?

For N to be divisible by 36, N must be divisible by 9 and 4.

(1) N is divisible by 9.

This statement tell us that N is divisible by 9, but does not tell us whether it is also divisible by 4. Hence this statement is not sufficient.

(2) N is divisible by 8.

This statement tell us that N is divisible by 4, but does not tell us whether it is also divisible by 9. Hence this statement is not sufficient.

Combining both statements together we know that N is divisible by 9 and 4.

Answer is C

The question is asking: Does N has at least 2^2* 3^2 as its factors?

1) Don't know anything about 2.
Insufficient.

BCE

2) Don't know anything about 3.

Both the statements together are sufficient to answer this question. Hence the answer is C.

1 is insufficient because we do not know the exact value
2 once again is insufficient because we do not know the exact value
1 & 2 together are sufficient. n is divisible by 36. The lcm of 9 & 8 is 72 and 72/36 = 2.
N could be a multiple of 72. It would still be divisible by 36.

The answer is C
