Is x > 0.05?

(1) x > 3/40
(2) x is greater than 3 percent of 50

Re-phrasing question stem:-Is x> \(\frac{1}{20}\) ?

St1:- \(x >\frac{3}{40}\)
Or,\(x> \frac{3}{2}* \frac{1}{20}\)
or, \(x>1.5* \frac{1}{20}\)
Hence Is x> \(\frac{1}{20}\)? Yes

St1 is sufficient.

St2:- x is greater than 3 percent of 50
Or, \(x> \frac{3}{100} *50\)
Or. \(x>3*\frac{1}{2}\)
Or, \(x>30*\frac{1}{20}\)
Hence Is x> \(\frac{1}{20}\)? Yes

St2 is sufficient.

Solution

To find:
    • Is x > 0.05

Analysing Statement 1
    • As per the information given in statement 1, \(x > \frac{3}{40}\)
      o The decimal equivalent of \(\frac{3}{40} = 0.075\)
    • If x > 0.075, then x is definitely greater than 0.05

Hence, statement 1 is sufficient to answer

Analysing Statement 2
    • As per the information given in statement 2, x is greater than 3 percent of 50
      o The value of 3% of 50 = \(50 * \frac{3}{100}\) = 1.5
    • If x is greater than 1.5, then x is definitely greater than 0.05

Hence, statement 2 is sufficient to answer

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

In those types of questions i do not prefer to convert ratios because it consumes valuable time.
In this regard for Stm A: is x>5/100?==> is x>1/20?==> is x>2/40? Ans is Yes because x>3/40

Very simple , x > 0.05 ?

A. x > 3/4 = 0.075

B. x = 3% of 50 = \frac{3}{100} *50 = 1.5

Both A & B individually correct ,so answer is D

On the GMAT you want to be very comfortable with converting decimals into fractions, and vise versa. For most people, it's usually easier to work with fractions
