statement 1: is obviously insuff
statement 2 is insuff because x can be .82, and y can be .9 or .7 and still satisfy the equation, AND x must be positive because y^2 is positive.

target area x>y, right side of line x=y.. blue line

statement 1 : green area ... not suff
statement 2 : yellow area --- not suff

combined : overlap area -- suff.. option C

(1) does not answer since xy x>y or x x is +ve and x > y^2 => x>y or x INSUFF

Now combine (1) and (2) =>x ,y have opp signs and x>0 => y=-ve
always x>y

hence C
