Firstly, and clearly, neither statements are alone sufficient. Because You have to figure out two variables (or at least they have to clearly relate somehow), which neither statement offers.

For each statement though, we could at least figure out what x or y is. From statement (1), x = 2 or -2. From statement (2), y = -2. Combined, we have x = y or x > y. Since we can't be sure if x > y or not, combined the two statements are still not sufficient.

we are asked to find out whether x>y or not.

statement 1:

only the value of x can be found out. No information regarding y. Thus , Not sufficient . but the value of x is either +2 or -2.

Statement 2:

The same case as statement 1. The value of y is -2.

Combining both statements:

x= +2 or -2
y = -2

As we have 2 values for x, it is impossible to be specific that which one is greater between x and y .

Thus, The best answer is E.

1) x^2 = 4 --> x = 2 or x = -2
NOT SUFFICIENT

2) y^3 = -8 --> y = -2
NOT SUFFICIENT

1+2) x = 2 & y = -2 --> 2 > -2 YES
x = -2 & y =-2 --> -2 > -2 NO
NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer = E
