What type of applicant is Kellogg looking for?
According to Kate Smith, Assistant Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at Kellogg, “We’re looking for those individuals who have found or plan to find unique ways to demonstrate the Kellogg purpose in their careers. As you consider leadership, in particular, keep in mind that Kellogg was the school that pioneered the team-based learning model that is now ubiquitous among the top business schools. We want all of our students to be able to step up when their teams need them.” source
Let’s dive into the essays’ prompts:
Essay 1:
Kellogg’s purpose is to educate, equip and inspire brave leaders who create lasting value. Provide a recent example where you have demonstrated leadership and created value. What challenges did you face and what did you learn? (450 words)
This question is targeted enough for you to be able to jump right in without wasting too much time on setting up the scene (keep it to one or two sentences at most). The operative words here are “recent experience” you can choose to feature a story from your professional or extracurricular path.
The goal of this question is for AdCom to understand the following:
How and when do you step into leadership? What’s your leadership style? (don’t forget to mention teamwork which is an important aspect of Kellogg’s culture).
What were the challenges you’ve encountered? What did you learn in the process? (it’s ok to display failures and weaknesses as long as you show how you were able to overcome these limitations).
What was the impact? (don’t feel obligated to restrict results to dollar amounts, think customer/stakeholder satisfaction or the lasting impact this leadership experience had on you).
How will you add value to the Kellogg community? (End this essay by discussing how you intend to use these skills to serve the Kellogg community).
Essay 2:
Values are what guide you in your life and work. What values are important to you and how have they influenced you? (450 words)
This essay question helps AdComs understand what drives and motivates you. Don’t feel restricted to one single value, you can select a couple as long as you clearly demonstrate how they influenced your actions both on a personal and professional standpoint… and how you intend to keep living by these values as a member of the Kellogg community and future business leader. The values you select per se are not as important as the anecdotes and stories you will choose to highlight.
To tackle this question, think why the values you selected are important to you, and how you apply them in everything you undertake in life.
If you are having a hard time identifying these values think about your most important achievements, interests, or life experiences. Are you seeing a common theme? Use experiences that fit into this theme as building blocks for your essay.
It might be a good idea to link your values to Kellogg’s offerings in terms of clubs, organizations, conferences etc. and how you intend to contribute based on your set of values.
Re-applicant Essay
Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? (250 word limit)
In this section, AdComs are particularly interested in the pro-active steps you took to improve your profile. Think new and improved GMAT/GRE scores, a promotion at work, or a significant leadership experience in your extracurricular activities.
