I'm taking my test tomorrow and I'm feeling pretty confident. That being said, I'm curious how much the individual sections affect the application process. I tend to do very well in verbal (mid 40s) in verbal and low 40s in quant. When added together they score well, but the quant is a bit low.

Any advice for the application process?

If you look around you will find multiple topics on this. Generally the aim is to try and get above the 80% range in both sections. Quant is more important though so you really do want to get above the 80% range on Q unless you have a strong quant background in undergrad or work...at which point you will want to write in your essays that your quant GMAT score does not represent your true quant abiliities, your A+ in calc III shows that you can handle the math of a b-school program.

Don't worry too much about the individual scores UNLESS you score way below 80% in one of them. If it's Quant, that can be remedied by your strong finance/statistics/math grade in undergrad or grad, or if your work revolves around finance/math, talk about it in your optional essay or in your career essay.

If you're really worried and have no other math background, take a class or two at a community college and try to score an A+ in the class to show you can handle th math.

Thanks, folks.

Taking the test tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes... Aiming for 700+, though, I don't expect to do too strong in the quant. That being said, I've taken some econ, stats and accounting during the past few years to develop my quant skills, which were lacking b/c of a liberal arts undergrad.

If I end up around 700 do you think I should retake and aim for higher quant, or just work out an elegant explanation in my essays?

If you are planning on applying this fall unless you are very very low don't worry about even trying to take it again. Your energy will be much better spent on all the essays you will have to do. Trust me its a lot more work than you imagine.

Good luck with the GMAT.

Thanks, folks. I got my 700 today, though, I'm concerned with my low quant score of 42. That being said, I'm going to move forward with the application process at Stanford (hellava reach), N. Western (quite a reach), and UNC.

Trying to think of a few other schools to apply to, but been having trouble. I'm definitely visiting the schools listed above during the next month or so, and we'll see how things go from there.
