Machine A takes twice as much time as machine B to make N items. Working together at their respective rates, A and B can make 5 items in 3 days. How many days will A take to produce 5 items?

A simple question, and can be solved quickly employing percentages! A and B together takes 3 days to complete 5 items and how long will A take to make the same no. of items?
The work done remains same and let's take the total work to be 100%. So the work done per day comes out to be 33.33%. Now A takes twice as much time as B, which can be interpreted as B is twice more efficient than A, and therefore the % of work done per day is twice of B as compared to A. Therefore, B must have done 22.22% per day while A doing only 11.11%. The time A will take to complete is 100/11.11, which comes out to be 9 days.

A takes twice the time hence his rate is half of B.
Rate of A : Rate of B = 1 : 2
If they are both working together, A will do \(\frac{1}{3}\)rd of the work while B will do \(\frac{2}{3}\)rd of the work.
They make 5 items in 3 days together i.e. they make 5/3rd of the items each day.
So A makes \((\frac{5}{3})*(\frac{1}{3})\) of the items each day = \(\frac{5}{9}\) of an item each day.
So to make 5 items, A needs 9 days.
