Many believe that Italian eggplants are the most popular among gardeners in the United States. Indeed, the Heirloom Eggplant Society reports that 25% of eggplant plants sold last year were of Italian eggplants, indicating that this belief is apparently correct.

Which of the following, if true, would most undermine the conclusion presented above?

A. Some of the eggplant plants sold were sold as seeds rather than seedlings.

B. The largest eggplant nursery in the United States only sells eggplant plants.

C. Most gardeners in the United States do not grow eggplant plants in their gardens.

D. At least some of the eggplant plants sold did not make it to maturity.

E. There are only 3 types of eggplant plants sold in the United States.

+1 for E.

Pre-thinking :
What if 25% is low compared to overall proportional representatives ?

E. There are only 3 types of eggplant plants sold in the United States. --> Correct, matches our pre-thinking, 25% of 3 representatives cannot be the "most popular"

Hence, E.

Which of the following, if true, would most undermine the conclusion presented above?

A. Some of the eggplant plants sold were sold as seeds rather than seedlings. Irrelevant

B. The largest eggplant nursery in the United States only sells eggplant plants. Irrelevant

C. Most gardeners in the United States do not grow eggplant plants in their gardens. Irrelevant

D. At least some of the eggplant plants sold did not make it to maturity. Irrelevant

E. There are only 3 types of eggplant plants sold in the United States. By POE, this is correct. Also makes sense since if there are only 3 types, then the other 2 make up 75% of eggplants; thus, the Italian breed cannot be the most popular.

Which of the following, if true, would most undermine the conclusion presented above?

A. Some of the eggplant plants sold were sold as seeds rather than seedlings. -- Incorrect -- whether these plants were sold as seeds or seedlings is not relevant

B. The largest eggplant nursery in the United States only sells eggplant plants. -- Irrelevant

C. Most gardeners in the United States do not grow eggplant plants in their gardens. -- Incorrect

D. At least some of the eggplant plants sold did not make it to maturity. -- Irrelevant

E. There are only 3 types of eggplant plants sold in the United States. - Correct -- So the remaining 75% is between the two other types of eggplants

This question is similar to the official question - https://gmatclub.com/forum/qotd-many-ga ... fl=similar

Answer E

The original argument needs to be changed as "Many believe that Italian eggplants are the most popular varities of eggplants among gardeners in the United States. "
In my opinion, in absence of the bolded phrase varities of eggplants, Option C does weaken the argument but not as strongly as option E. But if we limit the conclusion(by adding varities of eggplants) , then we limit the popularity of Italian eggplants only within the different types of Eggplants.

Many believe that Italian eggplants are the most popular among gardeners in the United States. --- As per option C, if more than 50% gardeners DO NOT grow eggplants in their gardens , then the likelihood of Italian eggplant being the most popular among gardeners in the US decreases.

ELLIPSIS is the omission of words whose presence is implied.
Generally, any implied word will appear earlier in the sentence.
Many believe that Italian eggplants are the most popular among gardeners in the United States.
Here, the phrase in blue must refer to eggplants, the only eligible referent that appears earlier in the sentence:
Many believe that Italian eggplants are the most popular [eggplants] among gardeners in the United States.
The word in brackets is omitted but implied.
Because the sentence offers no other possible referent for the phrase in blue, the intended meaning seems clear.

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

For any critical reasoning weaken question, your job is to first understand the stimulus and to find the gap between the information presented and the conclusion drawn. In this case, you're told that because 25% of eggplant plants sold last year were of Italian eggplants, the belief that Italian eggplant plants are the most popular is apparently correct.

While 25% of all sales might seem like a big number, the gap here is simple: how does this percent ensure that more Italian eggplant plants are sold than are any other type of eggplant plant? It doesn't, as (E) makes clear. If there are only 3 types of eggplant plants sold in the United States and 25% of them are Italian eggplants, then the smallest percent of eggplant plants that could have been sold of the other two is 37.5%. Since this is larger than 25%, this would guarantee that Italian eggplant plants aren't the most popular plant to buy to place in gardens.

Among the other answers, (A) can be eliminated because it doesn't matter what form the plants were sold in. Similarly, it doesn't matter if the largest eggplant nursery only sells eggplant plants or whether most gardeners grow eggplant plants, so both (B) and (C) can be eliminated. (D) can also be eliminated since even if the plants die before they reach maturity the gardeners are still growing those plants.
