Can someone explain me this question? I think the bold version is a good choice. but the answer explained in the book says neither of them are correct. Someone has some thoughts?

the people who had been waiting for a ride.
* Underlined portion may contain one or more errors. boldface choice changes that. but both of them may also be incorrect.
The answer provided for this question is that both of them, underlined and boldface are incorrect. the explanation is that the boldface corrects the statement that it is the people who had been waiting. but also introduces that it was the people who had been waiting for ride which is not justified saying it changes the meaning and so its not justified. so both the choice could be wrong.!!
