Could you please post the source of this question and also OE? I was stuck between A& E but still could not decide. I was surpized to see OA as D which seems grammatically unusual.

I got to D purely through elimination but agree that it sounds very unusual - the use of 'rather' and 'instead of' in the same sentence. What's the source of this question?

Whats wron with E ? Apart from being wordy, E looks best to me.
Source : GMAT Club Verbal Book Exercise. I thought since this was created by verbal experts here, authenticity of questions may not be doubted. Some of concepts mentioned there in seems weird.
