On a journey across Dhaka, a bus averages 10 miles/h for 20% of the distance, 30 miles/h for 60% of it and 20 miles/h for the remainder. What is the average speed for the whole journey?

(A) 30 mph
(B) 25 mph
(C) 20 mph
(D) 10 mph
(E) 5 mph

We can let the journey = 100 miles. So the bus averages 10 mph for the first 20 miles, 30 mph for the next 60 miles, and 20 mph for the final 20 miles. Therefore, the average speed of the entire journey is:

Average speed = Total distance / Total time

Average speed = 100 / (20/10 + 60/30 + 20/20)

Average speed = 100 / (2 + 2 + 1)

Average speed = 100 / 5

Average speed = 20 mph

I had approached the problem by taking weighted average of speed:
20/100*10 + 60/100 * 30 + 20/100 * 20

I am getting an answer of 24kmph for this.

Questions:
1) Why can I not take weighted average of spee?
2) Why does weighted average of speed with respect to time work?

TIA!
