why can't we have "had" after the comma? i fee you can remove the scientific name, with the comma, and maintain the meaning of the sentence.

btw, I think the correct answer is D

this problem is different
One of the earliest known birds with a beak and contour feathers, Confuciusornis sanctus, had large clawlike "thumbs" on its wings, probably to help it to climb up to a launching position for flight.

wouldn't it be better if use their and them instead of its and it????

What is that 'it' (before climb up) referring to? Subject (birds) is plural.
