Official Explanation:

(D) The original sentence, as given in choice (A), has
several grammatical issues. It uses awkward modifiers. (Even though "currently" works with "Pete Rose," it does not work with "originally a second baseman".) Also, it improperly uses "considered as," which should be "considered," uses "greater than" improperly in place of "more"'(with a countable number of games), and breaks parallelism by using "betting".
Choice (B) is incorrect because of using "considered to be".
Choice (C) uses "considered" properly, but it misuses "over". Also, it changes the meaning of the sentence with "while becoming," which implies that everything happened in 1985.
Choice (E) is almost correct, but it becomes wordy because having "in" before "more" is not necessary (given the inclusion of "at each of).

I am no expert, but here is my explanation:
Option E simplified:
Peter Rose was X, was Y. Ideally there should be a conjunction in between.
Let me know whether this helps.
