I stuck on this one. However, the solution provided by meanup doesn't seem to be correct to me.

Could you please let me know where you are finding it difficult? I could clarify it for you.

In Patna University, out of every 7 students learning science, 3 take literature as well; for every student taking at least one of these two courses, there are 3 students who take up neither. If 10% of the students take only science, the percentages who have taken science is:

A. \(7\frac{1}{2}\)%

B. \(12\)%

C. \(15\)%

D. \(17\frac{1}{2}\)%

E. \(23 \frac{1}{3}\)%

"Out of every 7 students learning science, 3 take literature as well". Given the question criteria, we may rewrite this as "out of every 7 students learning science, 4 learn science ONLY." Thus if 10% are learning science only, we have \(10/\frac{4}{7} = 10*\frac{7}{4} = 17.5\) percent learning science in total.

Good question! You would like to ignore this info after reading the question because it tells us something about "3 students" which isn't useful when we don't know the total amount of students. Every other quantity and the answers are in percentages/ratios, so there is no use for a single value.

Given out of every 7 science students - 3 also take Literature.

So the % of literature students in Science = 3/7 * 100

If 10% of the students take only science (Science - Literature) then Science = ?

Let the total % of students in Science is S

>> S - 3/7 (S) = 10%

>> 4s = 70%

>> s = 17.5%

Only science = 7-3 = 4
(Total Science student) * 10% = 4 students only science,
so, Total science students = 40 students

%students taken science = 7/40 *100 = 17.5%

So, I think D. :)
