Hi guys,

Could you please help evaluate my profile to determine whether I have any chance of getting into the HEC MBA program ?

Nationality: Indian
Undergrad: B.Tech in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Gender: Male
Age: 28
GPA: 8.2/10.0
GMAT: 660 (48Q/34V)
Work Experience : 6.5 yrs
I have been working in Shell for 6.5 years. First 3 years as a technical consultant for Offshore and marine projects within Asia-Pacific and Europe. Currently working as a Project Manager for Shell operated and fully owned refinery in Singapore. I have worked on Shell assets in Netherlands, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

I have a project management qualification with a chartership in progress for project management professionals from APM. I am also a certified BSI auditor for ISO 9001 quality standards audits. I am a qualified surveyor and I work with an NGO which supports ministry of forests and agriculture in animal census across different national parks in India.

I have been struggling with my low GMAT score and I am planning to retake the test to improve the same. But meanwhile I would still like to apply for the Sept 2021 intake as I need time to prepare for the same.

Thank you for your help. Really appreciate it.

Hey Abhi2907,

I would like to start off by saying that you have a pretty competitive profile.

To commence your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 8.20/10 not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you. Moreover, IIT Madras is a very prestigious school and its brand name aids in strengthening your profile as HEC tends to favour candidates from top schools of each country.

Coming on to your work experience, you have 6.5 years of work experience which is quite extensive and great for targeting an MBA program. You have worked in both a consultant and management role and dealt with various international clients which highlights your calibre for the program and your prowess in managing global clients and projects. Moreover, you have a good brand on your CV which definitely plays a major role in an application as you’d be competing with applicants from the top schools and big4 companies. To differentiate yourself from the applicant pool, you can talk about the kind of projects you have undertaken, the impact you created and your career progression with major learning takeaways.

Further, on the note of extracurriculars, you must be cognizant of the fact that schools seek applicants having a holistic profile. You have undertaken two certifications such as Project management qualification and BSI auditor which showcases your will to always upskill yourself and gain a holistic and cross-functional understanding of various business fields. Your involvement in NGO activities highlights your capability to utilize your skills for the betterment of society and make a positive impact, traits that every b-school is on the lookout for.

Coming on to your GMAT score, a score of 660 is pretty competitive ,however, you won’t be able to apply to your target school with it. HEC Paris is a highly competitive school with a minimum GMAT requirement of 710, hence I definitely agree with your decision to opt for a retake. Furthermore, since you are applying for a highly competitive program such as MBA, applying to simply one business school is not an optimal strategy, hence you can also check out some of the top US schools such as NYU, McCombs, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Maryland, UNC, North-Eastern University etc.

Even though your profile is pretty decent, it is important to be mindful of the fact that you’d be competing with similar competitive profiles such as yours. Which is why I’d suggest you lay emphasis on your admission application as a strong application holds 30% of weightage in the entire admission process and is also the way through which you can highlight your strengths and give apt justifications for your weaknesses to smooth over any flaws in your profile. Moreover, a strong application sets you apart from the rest of the competition and hence it is imperative that you use this tool in your arsenal to the best of your advantage.

Since you wish to apply to one of the top-notch and highly competitive schools in the world, you must be looking for some professional help to guide you through the application process. Hence, I’d suggest you book a free consultation call with our expert consultants who would clear any doubts you may have regarding the admission process and would help you chalk out a winning strategy that would definitely earn you an admit from your dream school.

Re: HEC Paris Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi all,

Appreciate you taking the time to take a look at my profile! I am interested in HEC MBA.

Background:
Female, 27 (will be 28 when I start the program), married, no children
Born in Russia; left home at 15 to attend boarding school in the UK; been living in the US since 2011.

Languages:
- russian (native)
- english (fluent)
- french (just started earlier this year; plan on going back to intensive learning once I am done with the GMAT/apps)

Education:
finished high school in the UK (A-Levels): Psychology, Economics, Politics, Maths
attended Syracuse University (USA) for undergrad; graduated with a B.S. in Communications and Rhetoric (2.94/4 GPA)
- no quant courses at all; low GPA because I was immature and needed some time to adjust to a new educational system (UK vs US)
- as an avid music fan, for the longest time I wanted to get into music industry
- while in college, I interned as a Spotify campus ambassador
- worked at a music venue off-campus as a promoter and led a marketing street team of 5 people
- wrote and did photography for a few campus magazines
- summer internships included marketing for a French social media company (Moscow, Russia), event marketing for a Russian media company (Moscow, Russia), marketing for a music startup in (NYC)

GMAT: 680 (42Q 41V IR6)

Professional:
- 4.5 years of experience post-graduation
- have a somewhat non-linear path; multiple industries, but most roles were in client relations in some capacity
- got into a highly competitive internship program with Red Bull (culture marketing) right after college in Atlanta, GA
- moved to NYC to start my career; ended up working at a digital agency as a project manager (bilingual environment; offshore team in Eastern Europe; US-based clients); consulted in UX and web design, managed client assets, received and shared technical specs
- was forced to leave my job and take a break due to a pending immigration case (did not have a work visa); spent this time volunteering for an events/music organization company, doing photo retouching, and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity as a Resource Development specialist
- joined an Ad-tech company in a rush to minimize unemployment, which backfired. for a brief time worked as an account manager until I realized I derive zero pleasure from working in advertising; left my job after 9 months to do some soul searching and decide what I wanted to do
- been working for an international ed-tech company (publicly traded) in NYC for close to 3 years; started as a coordinator, got promoted to manager after 1 year (and switched departments); got promoted a second time in October (two promotions in less than 3 years); my role is unique and involves project management and client relations, as well as instructional design consulting; I work with professors from top universities (currently: LSE and Harvard Business School); no direct reports

Extracurricular/Hobbies:
- avid traveler (been to 6 continents and 40+ countries)
- as mentioned above, I always wanted to work in the music industry but got discouraged when I saw the amount of discrimination women face in the music industry; nevertheless, I have been to hundreds of concerts and have proudly maintained a monthly favorites Spotify playlist consistently since 2016
- I have been doing photography since I was 15 (street, travel, portrait)
- volunteered for Sofar Sounds (an organization that puts on intimate concerts in bizarre venues, including people's living room around the globe); acted as the Show Lead for 2.5 years and organized dozens of concerts
- volunteered for Habitat for Humanity when I couldn't work
- huge cinephile, I adore film
- learning French for fun

Goals and Aspirations:
- would like to lean into my strengths and continue on a path of client relations, but on a larger scale; interested in strategic partnerships and customer success in the tech industry (would like to stay in Europe and relocate permanently through the MBA); specifically interested in roles at Salesforce, Atlassian, Google, Amazon
- also interested in product marketing (also in tech)

My general thoughts/questions:
- my quant score is low; my instinct is to retake to make my score a bit more balanced; given that the R1 deadline for Jan2022 is not until March, I have the time to improve my quant (but also don't want to waste my time on a retake if it's not exactly needed) -- should I retake the GMAT? I know the average is 690, but I am also considering my profile as a Russian female with a lot of international experience
- is MBAmath something I should consider? I did not take a single quant course since high school
- curious to hear your general thoughts and feedback

Thanks!

HEC is well known for taking a holistic approach when it comes to selecting candidates, so the GMAT score is not an absolute factor (especially when it comes to people with unconventional backgrounds). Take me as an example: I had a lower GMAT score and got accepted.

If you have time to retake the GMAT, it’s not going to hurt you if you get a better score (and might also help you if you are applying to other B-schools). 680 is pretty good for a non-quant background and if you do well on your essays, I think there is a chance.

Good luck.

Re: HEC Paris Profile Evaluation - Tools for B-School Profile Evaluation [#permalink]
Hi everyone,

Was hoping to get some insight on my overall profile.

Indian / F / 27.

I have strong academic credentials:
1. CGPA 10 / Rank #1 in secondary school examination (CBSE - grade X)
2. 96.25% / Rank #2 in higher secondary school examination (CBSE - grade XII)
3. CGPA 7.8 / 10 / Rank #3 in BCom with a major in Accounting and Finance
4. CFA Charterholder

Professionally, I have ~5.5 years of investment banking experience in India, of which I spent ~4 months working at the company's office in New York.

In addition, I am extremely passionate about Yoga. I am a certified instructor and teach on a regular basis.

I also took the GMAT last week after around 2 weeks of prep but scored a 640 (Q42 V35 AWA5 IR6). I lost points in Quants, but I am hoping my academic and professional qualifications would make up for it. I was wondering whether this score, considered in tandem with my overall profile, would be deemed competitive.

Thanks!

Background and nationality: American Woman, age 32. Planning to apply for Jan '22 intake.

Education Information: BA in History from School-You've-Never-Heard-Of. 3.62/4 GPA
Did a thesis project in undergrad.
Certificates from a couple of continuing education programs from other universities in management and HR topics.

GRE: Yet to take, but most recent mock was 164/164.

Work experience and leadership
Almost 10 years with a small wealth management, current role as Operations Manager. Licensed financial advisor; it's that not my role, however, outside of securities trading. I wear a lot of hats since it's a small business: working directly with clients, leading internal projects, supervising admin staff, event planning, HR. among others.

I also have a side business genealogy coaching (helping people with their family history research skills).

Community and others: Volunteer search angel (using DNA/genealogy to help adoptees identify their bio family).
Political campaigning
200 hours yoga teach training (not actively teaching)
2-3 international trips per year over the last 10ish years

Post MBA goals: Get employer sponsorship to work in Europe in the financial services industry, ideally in operations or project management. Preference would be to stay in the francophone areas, so France, francophone Switzerland, or Belgium. English speaking countries would be a second choice but open to it.

Anything else? I speak French at a B2 level, fully conversational but not quite ready to work 100% in the language yet.

Lafemmevoyage hi,
Shimri from ARINGO here
It sounds like you have a great profile!
- Great academics
- Great career progress
- I love the fact you have your little coaching side business too
- and lots and lots of extracurricular activities (volunteering is always important and I love the Yoga and Travelling, I am sure there is more!)

Your two "issues" are
- Lack of GRE/GMAT (164x2 would be great for all schools)
- and of course age/years of experience.

All in all, sounds like you have a solid profile! and you have high chances in ALL European schools!
Due to age and years of experience, the earlier you apply the better (you can still make it for Sep-2021! and if not, HEC has a Jan-2022 stream, perhaps aim for that one?)

Happy to help further with a detailed review and perhaps work together on some amazing apps. I suggest you get cracking with the GRE and talk to me when you are ready to start the app's process...as always I am on Shimriw@ARINGO.com

GOOD LUCK!

Hi Lafemmevoyage,

It seems you have a strong profile taking your diverse professional experiences into account and coupled with your expected GRE score. Your academics are strong too. The fact you have pursued education programs in the past, highlight a strong point that you have always strived to learn more and increase your potential.

HEC has been accepting GRE for a few years now. The b-school doesn’t disclose proper stats around GRE for the class profile. But chances are good as I believe you’ll be able to score in top percentiles.

Your ECs, travelling interest and knowledge of French will definitely add value to your profile. Overall, your post-MBA goals and international experience can help you describe your fit to HEC. Also, you have more experience than the usual class profile. Bank on it to demonstrate how your experience and values can bring contributions to the HEC community. If I should say, you have considerable experience in a startup working in different domains. You are being sponsored by your employer which shows the huge impact you have had on the company. Do exhibit how you’re a leader who inspired her colleagues and team to do their best work in the company.

We would love to hear your concerns and help you in your application strategy. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for a free consultation or any help or support. I wish you all the luck.

Cheers!

Hi themight,

Speaking of your academic performance, you have quite an impressive record. Your GPA of 3.7 showcases your strong academic prowess and most importantly, you have been the holder of a few major and minor scholarships which goes to show your academic prowess. Along with this, you are fluent in french and have also studied abroad at NUS Singapore, which adds the element of international exposure to your profile and brings to light your broadened perspective, adaptability and your thirst for knowledge. Furthermore, you have mentioned your potential GMAT score which is between 670-700, which is decent but in order to get into a school such as HEC, a score of 710+ is what you should be aiming for.

Talking about your work experience, you definitely have an upper-hand since you have internship experience in two big brands that are Amazon and Goldman Sachs which is what these B-schools are mostly looking for. Having said that to enhance your profile further, you can focus on highlighting the kind of projects you handled, the value you added to these projects, the skills you gained and the major takeaways.

Furthermore, your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important as it will showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. Needless to say, you definitely possess a good hold on your extracurricular activities as you have held quite a few leadership positions and have also been part of community service activities. While these activities are praiseworthy, you can add more value to your profile by digging deeper into the various endeavors you undertook and how you went above and beyond to excel in the same. For instance, you can elaborate on the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight your major takeaways. Additionally, you can also take up certain online courses or certifications related to the niche you would want to build your career in to further enhance your profile and proactive attitude.
All in all, these skills can contribute towards you being a great future leader which would automatically impress the adcoms.

Speaking of the school you are targeting - HEC, it falls under the dream category (where your chances of acceptance would be 50%). That said, I would suggest that you hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of 6-8 schools.

Under the dream category( 50% chances of acceptance) you can target schools such as LBS, LSE and INSEAD.
Under the competitive category( 70-80% chances of acceptance) you can target schools such as ESSEC, ESCP, FSFM, IE and ESADE.

Here, your application would play a huge role in enhancing your chances of getting accepted into your target schools as it would highlight your profile USP’s and overshadow any particular weaknesses in your profile. Additionally, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile.

That said, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service, that is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalised application suggestions, unlimited editing service and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey. We’ve helped 2500+ applicants get into their dream schools so far, and we’d love for you to be next!

Hey sachinacharya!

I would like to start off by saying that you have a pretty decent profile.

Your GPA of 7.45 not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you. Furthermore, since you haven’t given your GMAT yet, I’d advise you to target a score of 700+.

Moving on to your work experience, you have 5+ years of quality work experience. Even though your work experience is pretty extensive, there is one major factor that is missing throughout your profile and that is big brand names. The brand name plays a major role in an application as you’d be competing with applicants from the top schools and big4 companies. To negate the lack of big brand names, talking about the kind of projects you have undertaken, the impact you created and your career progression with major learning takeaways would definitely showcase the quality of your work and establish you as no less than a big4 candidate

Moreover, it is also great to note that you have a plentiful of international experience in your profile. International experience is a great way to highlight not only your global perspective and broadened horizons but also your capability to adapt and do well in foreign cultures and environments.

Further, on the note of extracurricular, top schools such as HEC tend to favour students with a holistically developed profile. Your photography experience showcases not only your artistic personality but also your event management skills. While your experience as the diplomatic liaison officer highlights your excellent communication skills. All in all, I would say that you have a pretty well-developed profile. However, since these experiences date back to your undergraduation, you can take up some certifications in the field you wish to pursue to display your proactiveness or take up some volunteering activities to highlight your community involvement and the capability to make a difference in the society through your skills.

Given your school choice, HEC Paris falls under the dream category which means that it has an acceptance rate of 8-12%, translating your chances of acceptance to 50% provided you back your profile with an impactful application that helps you stand out from the crowd. That said, when applying to B schools it is a better strategy to hedge your bets wisely and apply to a mixed bunch of 6-8 schools from the dream, competitive, and safe category.

Since you haven’t mentioned any other preferences in terms of school or country choices, it’ll be difficult for me to recommend schools that would fit your profile accurately. Therefore, I’d recommend you to check out our FREE Profile Evaluation Tool, which would provide you with a clear assessment of your chances at your schools of choice while also providing you with a personalized list of schools you can target based on your profile.

Hey muskan98!

To commence your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 3.1 not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you.

Your GRE score however does fall on the shorter end as HEC requires a minimum GRE score of 322. Hence, if you are especially keen on targeting HEC, you should definitely consider a retake.

Moving on to your work experience, you have 2 internships that embellish your profile with relevant and impactful work experience. However, there is one major factor that is missing throughout your profile and it is the lack of huge brand names. The brand name definitely plays a major role in an application as you’d be competing with applicants from the top schools and big4 companies. To negate the lack of big brand names, talking about the kind of projects you have undertaken, the impact you created, and your career progression with major learning takeaways would definitely showcase the quality of your work and establish you as no less than a big4 candidate.

It is impressive to note that you have an entrepreneurial experience in your profile, a trait well-revered by the B-schools. This when coupled with your community involvement through this venture not only highlights the breadth of knowledge you possess in the domain to be starting and running a successful start-up but also your ability to create a positive impact on society through your skills.

Given your school choice, HEC does fall under the dream category which means that it has an acceptance rate of only 12%. This converts your chances of acceptance into the program to be around 50%. That said, when applying abroad, it is a better strategy to hedge your bets wisely and apply to a mixed bunch of 6-8 schools. On this note, some other schools you can target based on your profile are:

Dream: INSEAD, LSE
Competitive: ESSEC, ESCP, FSFM
Safe: IE and Esade

Another aspect that you should be acquainted with while applying to B-schools is the importance of a strong application. Since you wish to apply to a highly competitive school such as HEC Paris, you’d be facing competition from a highly saturated and holistically developed competitor pool. Hence, a strong application would not only allow you to highlight your strength but also distinguish you from other applicants.

Therefore, in lieu of that, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, which has allowed us to help 3500+ applicants to get into their dream schools. As you are still in the early process of your application, it would provide you with end-to-end consulting and unlimited edits on your application documents. Not only that, you’d be connected with B-school alumni who’d be helping you directly with your application process!
