Hi HVD,

At the first glance itself, your profile stands out with exemplary achievements under your belt. To begin with, I must say that your academic performance so far is further complemented by your competitive GMAT score of 710 which overall testifies for your strong academic prowess and allows you to target most of the top tier B-schools.

Coming to your work experience, you have only mentioned an upcoming internship which is decent enough but you need to understand that you will be competing against applicants who have worked in the big four firms. To match up to the level of these competitors, you need to ensure that you take up quality internships where you can highlight the kind of projects you handled, the impacts you created, and the learnings you gained to showcase how you went above and beyond in your job role. So make sure you focus on steering your internship in the right direction and highlight previous such endeavors undertaken.

Moving on, your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important to showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. Needless to say, you definitely possess a decent hold on your extracurricular activities as you have been part of volunteering activities, two major exchange programs, and also you’ve held important positions in your college and school associations. Through these endeavors, you can showcase how you are socially responsible, adaptable and how you have the potential to become a future leader. That said, you can further enhance your profile by taking up a few certifications related to the niche you wish to build your career in.

Speaking of HEC Paris, it falls under the dream category where your chances of acceptance are 50%. Having said that, you can increase your chances of acceptance by optimizing your application (comprising your resume, LORs, and Essays) which is basically what differentiates you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same. Additionally, I would suggest that you hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of 6-8 schools such as ESSEC, ESCP, LSE, Dartmouth, SMU, and Purdue.

All things considered, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalized application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey! This end-to-end consulting service also encompasses assistance for scholarship essays, loans, visas, and most importantly the interview preparation.

Objective from an MBA- Looking to gain international exposure and switch career to technology or business consulting for BFSI industry. I am very interested with the technological disruptions happening in the BFSI industry and want to upskill to remain relevant and thrive in the industry.

Target colleges- HEC, IE, Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Alliance Manchester. Although I am targeting top colleges, I am cognizant of my low GRE/Acads, hence want to keep a good mix of colleges. I would prefer a college in the UK because of the technological developments originating/happening there and also because of lower dependance on an extra language. I am also quite prepared to justify a second MBA.

Thank you
Ankit

Hi ankitkg87,

To begin your profile evaluation, the first thing that I would like to address here is the fact that you are applying for a second MBA program as you have already completed your MBA studies from IIFT, Delhi with 67% which honestly is a bit on the lower end. However, you need not worry much about your GPA for the simple reason that for a professional degree such as MBA, the admission committee focuses on the quality and extent of your work experience rather than your academic record. Moreover, you have scored a 322 on your GRE which again is a good score that would allow you to target most of the top B-schools worldwide.

Coming to your work experience, you have more than 7 years of work experience in varied domains such as trading, banking as well as your dive into the entrepreneurial phase. Talking about your entrepreneurial venture, it is always appreciated by B-schools since they are looking for candidates who can add value to the cohort through their leadership capabilities. In addition to this, you have held managerial positions in your previous companies which is something that will work in your favour as it adds an element of relevancy to your profile in terms of the MBA which is a managerial program. To further enhance your profile, you could highlight the kind of projects you spearheaded, the impacts you created and the learnings you gained from the same. This way you will be able to differentiate yourself from the crowd especially from the ones who possess big brand names under their profile.

Speaking of the extracurriculars, you need to pay equal attention to this element of your profile as it helps showcase a holistically developed profile which is what every top B-schools are looking for. Having said that, you do possess a decent amount of diverse extracurricular activities under your belt. Most importantly, you should definitely highlight your volunteering activities as it showcases how you are an empathetic person with excellent social skills. Moreover, you have also held positions of responsibility when you found the photography and adventure cell in your college which again throws light on your leadership skills and initiative-taking skills. Additionally, you could also take up a few certifications in the niche you want to build your career in to showcase your constant drive to upskill yourself.

Finally coming to the schools that you are targeting, Cambridge, Imperial and Oxford are schools that focus more on the academic records of the applicant which is where you might fall a bit short since you have a rather low GPA. Thus, I would suggest that you drop in a mail to the respective schools for a confirmation on your eligibility for their MBA program. Moving on, HEC would fall under the dream category (where you have a 50-60% chances of acceptance) while Alliance Manchester would fall under the Competitive category (where you have a 60-70% chances of acceptance). In addition to these schools, I would suggest that you broaden your options in order to seal your chances of acceptance in any one of these schools. With this respect, you could target LBS, ESSEC, ESCP, Warwick, Cass and Durham.

All things considered, you definitely possess a well-groomed profile which you can utilize to the best of your abilities by crafting an equally strong application to increase your chances of acceptance. Your application (comprising your resume, LORs, and Essays) is what differentiates you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses such as your low GPA. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

That said, if you are on the fence on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalized application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey! This end-to-end consulting service also encompasses assistance for scholarship essays, loans, visas, and most importantly the interview preparation.

Hi Caterina98,

Your overall profile seems quite decent with room for further improvement. First and foremost you have an excellent GPA which showcases your academic capabilities. However, your GMAT score of 660 is a bit on the lower end which is why I would highly recommend that you retake your GMAT test and target at least a 700 so that you are on the same page when it comes to showcasing consistency in your academic prowess. Moreover, this would allow you to target most of the top B-schools.

Talking about your work experience, you have pursued a few internships in your college and school days which is decent enough. However, you lack big brand names under your profile and since most of your competitors hail from this pool you need to make sure that you adequately differentiate yourself. Thus you can showcase how you went above and beyond in your endeavors by highlighting why you chose these companies, the major projects you worked on, the impacts you created, and the skills you gained from the same. This way you will be able to set yourself at par with your competitors.

Coming to your extracurriculars, you need to make sure that you highlight a good mix of activities to showcase a holistically developed profile since it is something b-schools are always on the lookout for. Here you have mentioned your volunteering role in an animal shelter which highlights your socially empathetic traits. Similarly, you can talk about the clubs and associations you were involved in during your undergraduate, the teams you led and the certifications you undertook to showcase your thirst for knowledge paired with your soft skills which ultimately vouch for the budding leader within you.

Speaking of the school that you are targeting, HEC Paris falls under the dream category which means you have a 40-50% chance of acceptance. Taking this into account, I would suggest that you hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of 6-8 schools. Thus in addition to HEC, you can also broaden your options to schools like ESSEC, ESCP, ESADE, IE, and FSFM, all of which fall under the competitive category (where you have a 60-70%chance of acceptance). However, in order to accelerate your probability of getting an admit you need to direct your efforts towards crafting a strong application. Your application is basically what differentiates you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses which in your case is your low GMAT score. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

Thus, if you are contemplating how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which has helped 3500+ applicants secure admits from the top schools. It is a complete end-to-end consulting process aimed at providing personalized application suggestions, unlimited edits, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey!

Hi ashwin25k,

Thanks for sharing your profile. Your profile looks impressive, with work experience being the major highlight of your profile. Talking about your stats, they are decent, and your solid GMAT score is compensating for it.

On the work front, your work experience looks good. You must showcase your career progression in a stark way as it will provide the image of a high-performing individual. While creating the stories, you will need to put forth the leadership qualities. While listing your work or responsibilities, you will need to pick the most impacting one. Speak about experiences more profoundly and showcase how working on different projects has developed leadership qualities in you and how you had taken care of things when things went south.

Talking about your ECs, they are fine. You can talk about your involvement in various sports. The committee’s goal is to fill the class with as many perspectives and as much diversity as possible. You will need to bring diversity to your profile. Try to find something you are doing now beyond work, dig deeper and find the answer for the same. You can mention your hobbies and interests. They add a broader perspective to the profile and values, which help in determining b-schools whether a candidate is a right fit for b-school or not.

All of this should come together to make a clear point of how your post-MBA goal falls in line with your abilities, interests, and past professional experience. According to your post-MBA goals, IMD could be the perfect fit for you. You belong to the overrepresented pool, so a quality essay will show what you have accomplished and how you stand out from your fellow applicants. You can also take a look at this article it will help you strengthen your HEC MBA application.

As you are targeting HEC and IMD, and if you want to get better insights into what the school looks for and how you can better strategise your application, you can look into this session. It's on 27th March, and it's a personalised session to help you assess your chances.

Overall you have a good profile, but I am missing impact right now. I am keen to hear more about your story to draw out the relevance of b-schools in your profile. If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to b-school. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

First thing first, your grade of 73% is quite decent while your GMAT score of 710 is impressive enough to allow you to target most of the top-ranking B-schools in the world as these figures draw attention to your strong academic prowess.

Moving on to your work experience, your unique background in the Indian Airforce department along with an extensive period of work experience for an MBA program helps differentiate you from the competition and thus gives you an edge over the rest of the applicant pool. Apart from this, you can further add value to your profile, by highlighting some of your most impactful endeavours in this realm including your major learnings from this experience and the skills that you harvested throughout these endeavours. Most importantly, through this work experience, you can showcase your practical expertise along with playing a small but important role in serving society and the country in general.

Speaking of the extracurricular activities, you have again hit the nail on the head by leaving your imprints on some of the most diverse activities out there which favours your candidature even more. However, to showcase how you went above and beyond in your varied endeavours, it is important that you highlight your positions of responsibility, the impacts you created and the major takeaways you were able to attain from the same. This way, you would be able to not just portray your achievements on the surface level but you would be giving a much deeper insight into the overall process.

Moving forward, your potential to bag an admit at HEC Paris which comes under the dream category lies in the 50% range. On this note, it is imperative that you hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of 6-8 schools such as LBS, INSEAD in the dream category and Essec, ESCP, FSFM, WHU, IE and ESADE in the competitive category (where your chances of acceptance are 60%). You can boost your chances of acceptance by drawing attention to the stronger aspects of your profile which can be achieved through your application. Your application is basically what can differentiate you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses. You also need to showcase your journey and how you are a great value addition to the school. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

Hello sahilaro23,

Thank you for sharing. Great to see that you have broken down your post-MBA goals into short and long-term.

As an Indian male engineer, you come from a very competitive set of applicants. A lot will come down to figuring out how to differentiate yourself in the applicant pool. Part of this entails securing a higher GMAT. Last time HEC Paris shared class profile stats, they reported an average GMAT of 690. I suggest working to break into the 700s to enhance your candidacy.

Along with testing, I suggest putting a lot of work into your personal story. The most successful candidates craft unique and compelling essays. This is a large component of Personal MBA Coach’s support and the area where we find our clients need the most guidance. Take a look at our comprehensive services to learn more about story development and other key areas that we target to help clients successfully navigate the application process.

If you raise your GMAT and have a strong set of essays, you will have a good shot at HEC Paris (though Personal MBA Coach recommends applying to 5 to 7 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance).

If you would like to discuss your situation in more depth, do not hesitate to reach out at scott@personalmbacoach.com.

Best,

Hello Karthik740,

Thank you for sharing. Your work experience, academics and GMAT look solid. Something that sticks out to me is your short- and long-term goals. Your long-term goal should flow logically from your short-term goal. While you do not need to rise through the standard career ranks in MBB consulting, your career path should make sense to the reader and allow you to leverage the skills you will develop during your MBA and throughout your early post-MBA career.

While going from consulting to PE is possible, it is not the easiest. We may recommend doing banking first.

Aside from successfully articulating your goals (a component of Personal MBA Coach’s support), a lot will come down to figuring out how to differentiate yourself in the applicant pool. The most successful candidates craft unique and compelling personal stories. This is another large component of Personal MBA Coach’s support and the area where we find our clients need the most guidance. Take a look at our services to learn more about story development and other key areas that we target to help clients successfully navigate the application process.

If you start early and have a strong set of essays, you will have a good shot at HEC Paris (though Personal MBA Coach recommends applying to 5 to 7 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance).

Feel free to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your candidacy.

Hi guys,

I am a 29 year old Egyptian with a technical background and I am considering applying for HEC MBA. Can you give me some feedback?

Education:
I have a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering with a 77% degree from one Egypt's top schools. In Egypt it is a 5 year degree and 77% is a very good degree compared to excellent which starts at 85%. After that, I was selected for a scholarship with an acceptance rate of 1% to continue my diploma in Mechatronics, and used this diploma to pursue a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering in Germany with a 1.3 degree "100%= 1 in Germany, and 5= failing".

Work experience:
I have worked as an international freelance inspector before graduation and have travelled to China, Italy, Finland and many other European countries. During my Master's degree in Germany, I had a couple of student jobs as an engineer and started a full-time engineering position right after, also in Germany, focusing on customer support for 1.5 years. After that, however, I moved into product management for more than two years. The product manager role is truly international in the sense that I coordinate work with other groups in Japan, USA, France, China and of course Germany. It also involved strategy definition and business development.

Extracurricular activities:
This was really during my undergrad-studies in Egypt, as I participated in a number of NGO initiatives with a cultural background and was a project manager for an arts and culture program, leading 100 volunteers. In Germany I only did 3 months of volunteering, which I think is too small to mention.

Languages:
German, English, Arabic, and basic Spanish.

GMAT score:
Not yet available. I scored 540 on the test exam without preparation, I have 7 weeks left to prepare with about 10-15 hours per week.

Hello samavi,

Apologies for a delayed response but we hope this finds you in time still.

There is indeed a lot that works well for you, particularly your diversified experience as an aeronautical engineer, participation in high-pressure operations, and work with individuals from other countries; please do highlight the same through specific examples in your essays. Your essays are frankly the most crucial step considering your overall profile, complete with some fine extra-curricular activities, is in place; since you have clarity on your short-term goals, do ensure that you portray them in a way that they appear to be in sync with your existing experience; besides, your short-term goals must also be in sync with your long-term goals and larger vision.

Overall, we see a good chance at you making it to HEC Paris.

All the best!

Hello EgyGer1,

Hope this finds you well.

You definitely belong to an underrepresented pool of applicants and that is something that will work to your advantage; needless to say, the extensive international exposure is a major plus especially because it would have left you with a multitude of experiences to talk about in your essays.

In terms of your profile, almost everything works well for you; hence, your chances of making it to HEC Paris are now primarily dependent on your GMAT score; getting a score somewhere around the class average is what you must aim for; once that is out of the way, focus on structuring your essays, and, most importantly, your short-term and long-term goals; needless to say, attempt to portray sync between your existing professional experience and future career goals.

A competitive GMAT score, coupled with a set of essays that appropriately highlight your experiences and accolades will give you a very competitive chance at making it to HEC Paris.

All the best!

Hi Alchemar,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Overall, if you are an excellent candidate who has had enough time to prepare for your candidacy, you can apply to your top preference school (HEC in your case) in the first round. If you are a strong candidate and benefit from a little more time and experience in the application process, consider delaying your application to your top choice school until Round 2. Meanwhile, apply to a couple of other schools (that you would attend if not admitted to your top choice) in Round 1. Applying early shows your commitment to the school and maybe advantageous for grants, scholarships. So, applying in the first and second rounds always had high chances of selection.

You have a competitive GMAT score, so this part is pretty sorted for you. On the work front, working through various roles as an engineer and now as AM seems to have had an impact, but keep in mind that you will need to talk about how you dealt with the tough situation and how it impacted your organization. Since you were in a managerial position, I believe you can bring stories of 'leadership' and 'impact' into your essays.

If you need any direction/guidance over any aspect of your application and have any specific concerns, you can ask us on the forum Ask MBA & Beyond.

Ecs seem good. Being a member of various clubs would have provided you with some valuable experience that will help you bring diversity to your profile. Try to bring attributes that would encompass your entire personality.

You must bring very specific post-MBA targets. You'll need to narrow things down to the consultancy industry, the firms you'd like to work with, your long-term goals, and so on. HEC, LBS, and Booth are the best pick for consulting. You can consider 3-4 schools among EU &US, which are the best options for consulting to balance your chances. You will need to start early and take a couple of months just to brainstorm. We have an extensive content gathering process where we just spend hours brainstorming to set the story’s theme and narrative.

Overall you have a good profile. Make sure you specify how a particular b-school will help you fill the gaps in your profile to achieve your post-MBA goals. The most important thing about your application is how you link the dots and provide a compelling story to differentiate yourself from the other candidates in the pool.

If you’d like, we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Let’s maximize your chances in Round 1 for fall intake

Cheers!
