Hi guys!!

Nationality / Age:
Canadian citizen (born and raised), ethnically Greek and Italian, 23 male

GMAT/GRE Score:
GMAT 1: 600 (sad, but I didn't study enough and I'm confident I can get at least 660) GMAT 2: TBD (March 27)

GPA / Work experience:
3.46 GPA (out of 4.3). 3 years work experience (while in school) at Bollore logistics as an ocean import agent and currently as a data analyst

Educational Background:
Concordia, John Molson School of Business Bcomm in Finance

Some notes:
- Average GPA for my program: 2.7 (out of 4.3)
- I have straight A's in every finance class and every accounting, statistics, and economics class
- Average GPA for most of my finance classes range between 1.7 and 2.3 (I have straight 4.0-4.3s)

Master program(s) you are applying to?:
Masters in Finance. targets/dream schools:
- HEC Paris
- IE
- LBS
- McCombs
- USC Marshall
- Anything else??

Post-MS Targets:
Hedge fund manager, portfolio manger, private equity analyst...etc. anything involving capital markets

notes:
- Avid author on TradingView. I publish charts and trading ideas as well as due diligence on up and coming companies I invest in
- I am very well versed in capital markets and follow them almost 8 hours a day while juggling work, school, and GMAT studying
- Active day trader specializing in high risk growth assets; I am also very profitable (to the point that I have considered doing it full time and pursuing a masters later on in my life)
- I have plans to start a (hedge) fund right out of my masters with a close friend; someone who I trade with. We have access to funding
- When I finish my masters I plan on buying another property with my brother as a means for passive income. My brother and I already own a quadplex as an investment

I am saying all of the above now as supplemental info because I'm unsure if I should talk about this stuff when I apply, would love to hear feedback!! Thanks so much :)

Hi Danraf,

From the first look itself, your profile looks well groomed and competitive. You have completed your undergraduate from Concordia, John Molson School of Business, being a top school in Canada, is definitely a good brand name in your CV. Besides you have done Bcom in Finance and you are going to pursue a masters in finance which showcases the relevance in your field of study, something which most B-schools look for. Moreover, your CGPA of 3.46 is quite impressive which shows your strong academic prowess and would allow you to target most of the top B-schools.

Coming to your work experience, you have a pretty extensive period of practical experience. However, you need to make sure that you have relevant experience in the field of finance. You have mentioned that you worked as an ocean import agent and a data analyst which is decent enough, but you need to highlight your exposure in the finance domain to showcase relevancy to the program you are applying for. Moreover, since you will be facing a lot of competition from applicants who have worked in the big 4 finance firms such as KPMG, BLACKROCK, PwC etc, you need to differentiate yourself by highlighting your attention to other aspects of your profile. You can thus talk about the kind of projects you spearheaded, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways in order to stand at par with them.

When it comes to your extracurriculars, you have mentioned mostly things related to the trading and capital market and your active involvement in it. Since you have not mentioned much about your extracurriculars, I would like to tell you that Extracurricular participation plays an important role in strengthening your application as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. In order to overshadow this shortcoming in your profile, you can also take up NGO volunteering works and certain online courses or certifications related to finance such as CFA to further enhance your profile and proactive attitude.

Looking at the GMAT score that you are targeting which is 660 is a bit on the lower end and I would highly suggest that you target at least a 690 with a minimum quant score of 49+ to justify your passion for the field of finance.

Speaking of the schools that you are targeting, HEC Paris, LBS and UC Marshall comes under the dream category (where your chances of acceptance is 50%) while IE and McCombs comes under the competitive category (where your chances of acceptance is 70%). This is where your application would play a huge role in increasing your chances of getting accepted as it would highlight your profile USP’s and overshadow any particular weaknesses in your profile.

That said, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which has helped 3500+ applicants secure admits from the top schools. Moreover, it is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalised application suggestions, unlimited editing service, and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey.

Hi "ankit1234567" - Jen from ARINGO here, would love to provide some feedback as it relates to HEC Paris
Academics - very strong, great job
Professional - good years of experience, any promotions or international experiences/clients?
EC's: Share more about your experience with your community work (what did you do/accomplish/impact), any leadership roles outside of work or during B. Tech
Post-MBA Goal - would recommend leveraging your experience in O&G and mention key recruiters at HEC Paris that may have a focus on energy sector

Overall - HEC Paris is a great fit (on the safer side for your profile), good career prospects as well post-MBA in that region

We have consultants that work with HEC Paris applications every cycle (our clients have an 80% success rate) and I'd love to speak more about how we can help you. Please feel free to email me at JeniferT@ARINGO.com to discuss more.

Hi ankit1234567,

Your acads look solid! I can see from your profile that you have a concentrated work exp in a core and a great GRE score. As your post-MBA target is consulting, LBS and INSEAD will be great choices for you. Besides, the average GRE required for LBS is 320 so you're good to go :)

LBS and HEC look for candidates who have gained high-quality exp, but who are at an early stage of their career. From my experience, people from oil and gas do have solid achievements and great stories to bring on the table. Highlight the insights you've acquired, the challenges you've experienced, your learnings from this environment, and how this has helped you shape your personality.

Because you have not given broad information about your work history and extracurriculars, it is difficult for me to determine your fit to HEC and give you a good, detailed evaluation. I would like to hear in-depth about you, your story and your interests.

Also, to give you some context, we have a hundred per cent conversion rate for people from oil&gas to Top US and Europe schools. You may want to read one of the successful essays to INSEAD. It will help you give a good idea about your chances to HEC and will instill “right” confidence in you :).

If you'd like, I'm happy to hop on a call sometime this week to address your concerns better and gauge your fit to HEC and other schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hey ankit1234567,

To begin with, your undergraduate GPA of 8.67/10 is pretty impressive and thus boasts of your academic prowess. Moreover, the brand of your undergraduate college - ranking among the top colleges in India, gives your profile a boost as schools tend to pick out applicants from the top schools of each country. In addition to this, an overall GRE score of 330 is pretty competitive and would set you comfortable in targeting most of the top B schools, including HEC Paris.

As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 4.5 years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants. In order to stand out from the crowd, you most certainly should focus on your leadership roles and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge.

Moreover, the presence of a big brand in your CV is an added feather to your hat as you will be competing against a pool of applicants hailing from similar backgrounds. Here, showcasing your journey and the learnings gathered through this experience would allow you to differentiate yourself and thereby gain an upper hand with equally competent profiles with extensive work experience hailing from equally good brands.

Since you haven’t provided much information regarding your extracurriculars, I would like to tell you that your extracurricular activities are equally important as AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles. Thus, it is essential to shed light on the endeavors you’ve taken up at the clubs, associations, or events you managed or participated in most recently. You can also throw in a few endeavors related to upskilling yourself, for example, courses or certifications taken up related to your field of interest or some CSR activities with NGOs to showcase your empathetic nature and your drive to give back to society.

As for your chances of acceptance at HEC Paris, based on your profile, you have a 50% chance of getting admitted to the school as HEC falls under the dream category. That said, in order to hedge your bets wisely, it is always better to target a good mix of dream, competitive, and safe schools. Some of the schools that you can be targeting in the respective mix of categories are listed below.

Dream: INSEAD, LBS, Oxford, Michigan

Competitive: ESSEC, ESCP, USC Marshall

On this note, while you have a competitive profile, to increase your chances of getting admitted to these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application (consisting of - Essays, LORs, and Resume) that highlights your strengths and overshadows your weaknesses in order to differentiate your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers, and how you are a great value addition to the school.

Therefore, in lieu of that, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, that has helped 3500+ applicants get into their dream schools. You would also be entitled to an end-to-end consulting combined with unlimited edits on your application documents. Not only this, you’d be consulted by a B-school alumnus who’d be helping you directly with your application process, right from shortlisting the right schools and submitting an impactful application to the school to preparing you for the interview and bagging scholarships!

Hi vatsal1811,

On the surface, your profile looks good. Your acads are quite great for HEC and other European schools. For your professional experience, I can see a good career trajectory and working in a leading firm will help you amplify any impact you may have created through your projects. Also, you have interned in quite different industries for different roles. This must explain your career trajectory and post-MBA goals to some extent.

For ECs, I especially liked your different entrepreneurial endeavours in various different fields. Also, here I can see a leadership stint as well. This part must bring some interesting stories to the table. But post-undergrad, I do not see any consistent interest that you pursue. There are good things here and there but adcoms would want to know your core interests and passions to know you holistically.

Since you have not provided a lot of details over your profile, there are many unknowns to address before I can give you a comprehensive evaluation for Sep 21 intake. Also, what are your post-MBA goals?

Overall, you have a good profile but it's difficult to comment on your chances for any school for Sep 21. You may consider LBS, Insead (for Jan '22) and NUS. If you're considering the US as well, there are few schools who give a fair shot to applicants in R3. You can see a list here.

If you'd like, we are happy to hop on a call with you and discuss your profile in detail. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi HVD,

Thank you for sharing. Great to see that you have some extracurricular/volunteer experience under your belt and an internship lined up for this upcoming summer.

HEC Paris will want to see a strong track record of leadership, so I’d like to know more about your extracurriculars and volunteer work. For instance, how much prep goes into the yearly non-profit cycling rally? What is the specific student association that you are a member of and what role do you play? How do you contribute to the student investment club? Make sure you can articulate how you made a tangible impact here.

Strong candidates also have a clear sense of their career goals. It looks like you are entertaining a couple of different career plans (corporate strategy/digital transformation strategy vs. consulting). My advice to you would be to pick a set of goals and run with it. While no school will hold you to what you write in your applications, you should generally be decisive when discussing career goals.

What other programs are you applying to? At Personal MBA Coach, we recommend applying to 5 to 7 schools to maximize your chances of acceptance.

Do not hesitate to reach out to discuss your profile in more detail: scott@personalmbacoach.com.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Hi HVD,

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks good and your GMAT score is above the HEC average GMAT, so this part is pretty sorted. It's good to see your language proficiency in English as HEC wants the candidate to be fluent in English and learning French will also expand your placement opportunities in EU countries.

On the work front, I can't comment on your internship experience as it is about to happen, but make sure you take interesting projects and have a quality experience that demonstrates your leadership skills and the values of the targeted b-school. Your experience in volunteering will add some colour to your profile and help you create some amazing stories.

Your ECs are good, you can highlight the responsibilities you have undertaken as member of different associations as it will add considerable value to your profile. Also, put a spotlight on your international experience and try to give your overall profile a global outlook.

Overall, you've got a good profile, but I don't see any impact right now. I'm keen to hear more about your story, and your post-MBA goals. If you’d like we are happy to hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and give you a more realistic assessment. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

-French: Average; has been better in the past, but after a week or so practicing and talking in French, it improves and I can conduct normal (kind of fluently) conversations in French

Professional Career plan:
Corporate strategy and digital transformation strategy, could be consulting but this is not the main priority.

Any advice or comments on my application?

Hello Caterina98,

Thanks for sharing and great to hear that you have already secured some letters of recommendation.

One of the main things I would recommend you focus on is maximizing your GMAT. HEC Paris’s MSc Marketing admits have an average GMAT of 700. Getting above 660 and into the 700s will undoubtedly strengthen your application. Personal MBA Coach can help you boost this score through our customized tutoring services. Our tutors have scored in the 99th percentile on the GMAT / GRE and are graduates of MIT, Harvard, and UPenn.

As I’m sure you have heard before (though it is worth repeating), schools want leaders. You have some good internship, volunteer, and international experience. The key, however, is showing how you made an impact and demonstrated leadership in these positions. I would like to know more about your extracurricular experience as well and how this could tie into the rest of your application.

Do not hesitate to reach out to scott@personalmbacoach.com to learn more about how you can enhance your candidacy.

Best,
Personal MBA Coach

Targeting Sep'21 intake, Other schools that I should target?

Hey vatsal1811!

To commence your profile evaluation, I would say that your academic background is quite strong. Your GPA of 7.7 not only displays your academic prowess but also opens a lot of opportunities and doors to top business schools for you. The brand name of BITS Pilani further aids in strengthening your profile as HEC tends to favour candidates from top schools of each country. Moreover, your minor in finance is an added streak to your profile which not only displays your proclivity for the program but also your aptitude for the subject.

Additionally, your GMAT score of 710 is quite competitive which not only allows you to target HEC Paris but several other top b-schools worldwide. Furthermore, your certification of CFA level 1 goes on to highlight your passion for the field of finance and your drive to upskill yourself on this end.

Moving on to your work experience, you have around 4 years of quality work experience including your internships. Even though your profile is embellished with big brands such as Goldman Sachs, you should be mindful of the fact that you’d be facing stringent competition from candidates with similar or even stronger credentials. Hence, you should focus your might on differentiating yourself by talking about the kind of projects you have undertaken, the impact you created and your career progression along with your major learning takeaways.

Further on the note of extracurriculars, HEC tends to prefer candidates with well-rounded and holistically developed profiles. Hence, accounting for the same, your experience of volunteering at several organizations and initiatives vouches for your active community involvement and socially empathetic attitude. Your venture of founding the videography division in your college highlights the entrepreneurial streak in your personality while your stint as the CIO of the investing club showcases your financial acumen and leadership skills. All things considered, I would say that you have a pretty well-groomed and holistically developed profile.

Given your school choice, I would comment that HEC Paris is a dream school with a highly stringent acceptance rate of 8-12%, and hence you have around 50% chances of acceptance into its MBA program. But while applying to B-schools, you should hedge your bets wisely and apply to a good mix of 6-8 schools. Hence, based on your profile, you should also consider targeting the following schools.

Dream: Insead, LBS, Duke, NYU etc
Competitive: ESSEC, ESCP, FSFM etc.

Another factor that you should focus towards while applying to B-schools is crafting a really strong application. Since you wish to apply to a highly competitive school such as HEC, you’d be facing competition from a highly saturated and holistically developed competitor pool. Hence, a strong application would not only allow you to highlight your strength but also distinguish you from other applicants.

Therefore, in lieu of that, I would recommend you to check out our flagship ALL-IN-ONE service, which has allowed us to help 3500+ applicants to get into their dream schools. As you are still in the early process of your application, it would provide you with end-to-end consulting and unlimited edits on your application documents. With our customized approach and carefully crafted applications, we have helped our clients bag scholarships worth 3.3 million Euros and we’d love for you to be next.

Hi ankitkg87,

Your profile seems interesting with a lot of good elements. Let's start with your work experience as it is the most important aspect of your profile. I can see international exposure in your profile, working with and managing clients across the globe. This shows your organisational skills and says a lot of your personality as a relationship manager. It also reveals your ability to interact with multiple personalities. Highlight the instance where you have addressed a problem and undertaken responsibility that has had an impact on the growth and progress of your organisation. Put a spotlight on how you have been accountable for preserving the integrity of the organisation.

Your academics are quite on the lower side, and your GMAT is also quite low, but if you believe you can do better, you can take another shot, otherwise, just work to pull out strong stories and craft stories while bearing in mind the values of the specific b-school you're targeting.

Ecs are interesting, photography and adventure cell sound pretty cool! You must speak about it to demonstrate your diverse personality. Share your volunteer experience, talk about the organisation you've volunteered for. You may bring the narrative of how these experiences helped in building your personality.

Your clarity about your post-MBA goals is really nice, talk about your specific interest in the BFSI industry so that adcoms will get to know your aspirations and interests. As your post-MBA goal is to consulting HEC and Oxford would be a perfect choice for you. There are very few people who really have the clear, unique motivations behind pursuing an MBA and you seem one among them. Make sure you specify how each school can help fill gaps in your profile and lead you to your life goals. If you like you can get insight into this article on How to make up for a low GMAT score.

If you’d like we are happy yo hop on a call with you sometime this week to discuss your profile in length and gauge your fit for other b-schools. Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.
