On its own, neither high grades nor employment experience can entirely establish a student's ability to compete in the working world. Both are required concurrently since high marks indicate a student that may only focus on school, and employment experience demonstrates that a student may have the practical, but not the educational experience to do a job.

If the facts stated above are true, a solid test of a student's competitiveness in the working world is the ability to:

A Achieve high marks and gain relevant employment experience.
B Gain relevant employment experience, while letting grades fall.
C Not gain relevant employment experience, while grades rise.
D Not have high grades, while employment hours accrue.
E Maintain the same grades, while not increasing relevant employment experience.

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

This is a supply the conclusion question.

Identify the premises of the argument. First, neither high grades nor employment experience themselves, establishes a student's ability to compete in the working world. Second, both are required since high marks indicate a student that may only focus on school, and employment experience demonstrates that a student may have the practical, but not the educational experience to do a job.

Assuming all the premises are true, is there an obvious conclusion that could be drawn from the premises? In this example, we would look for a conclusion that involves both high marks, and employment experience, as factors that would make a student competitive in the working world.

Eliminate answer choices that do not support both premises. Choices B and C only acknowledge the importance of employment experience or high grades, but not both, as is required by the second premise. Choices D and E also do not fit with the premises of needing high grades and employment experience in order for a student to be successful in the working world. Choice A is the only answer that leads both premises to a logical conclusion.
