Entertainment and news are not mutually exclusive categories: lets take this as true and see how that impact the conclusion: So these critics are mistaken.

If entertainment and news are not mutually exclusive it means all the reporters are entertainers, but the critics have not contested that. They both can be same but when you increase entertainment factor, the reporting standards fall is what has been contested. So even if the D is true it does not address why increasing the entertainment does not result in decline in reporting standard.

For the critics to be wrong we have to establish why even though entertainment factor increases the reporting does not decline. That's what statement A does we have been told in the passage that the greatest journalist provide more entertainment and if we can assume that they also have good reporting standard it would imply that even when entertainment increases, reporting standard does not decline hence proving the critics wrong.

Hope this helps
