Update: Wharton info Session, Bangalore
Thomas Caleel is a fantastic speaker. He spoke for about an hour and a half on things I had already read about here, in other forums, blogs, websites etc. But he still had me (and the rest of the audience) listening with rapt attention. He makes it all look so damn simple! Nonetheless,as you might have guessed, the presentation just reitereated most of the stuff we have already discussed here.

- Be yourself in the essays
- Look past the stats and paint a complete picture of yourselves
- Wharton is not a bunch of quant jocks

Some takewaways:
- 700+ on the GMAT is not a must, but Wharton really likes the 80/80 split.
- Wharton really digs self awareness.
- alumni very friendly and open to discussion. Really hope to be interviewed by one of these guys
- To young Indian IT applicants: If you haven't led teams, don't make it sound like you have.
- Very student driven culture. TONS of choices...
- A glitch here and there is ok, but put things into context by explaining why.

Good question. I didn't notice any either. For now I left it single spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman

There are word limits, but I haven't seen any formatting specs. I'm going to make it double spaced with 11 Arial so that its easy on the eyes. I would double check the "Applications Instructions" though. Too lazy to look myself right now.

Just to add, he did say not to rush through the app itself especially the employment history portion. Do not start and finish the app on the 11th, apparantly they see the server records

how different is the employment record from your resume? for the responsibilities, is that supposed to be more general than just listing your past accomplishments?

Huh? I've filled out most of the app and I don't remember seeing this.

i think hes referring to the employment section where you describe your responsibilities. same thing with your activities. im not sure if i should just list things like a resume, or write it out in prose.

i have a question about listing awards. in the education portion they have an entry for awards, but in the other information section they have a specific question on awards. do we list the same awards from college twice?

Basically he advised that applicants not rush through the app...you spend all this time on essays but the app itself is very important. So give yourself a couple of days to carefully fill out the points and make sure that it shows them what you want it to.

Nice job Kripal !!

My share of inputs:

1. I was really impressed with Wharton network.
2. One alumnus felt that 2 year program is better compared to 1 year program to get the most out of MBA experience
3. Though Wharton is known for finance, they have a very strong marketing department too.
4. I felt that they were trying to project their focus on consulting.
5. Numbers matter, but not in the case of every body.
6. Recos: Titles do not matter.
7. GMAT average for 2009 batch is 712. 89% took loans. 74 countries representation. Around 40% females. They dinged more than 900 people with 760+ GMAT last year. They also dinged a guy who got 800 two times. Guy is not crazy. The guy took first GMAT more than 6 years back.
8. Undergraduates at Penn are wilder.
9. Usually Wharton graduates choose among employers.

I'm guessing those 900+ with 760+ GMAT and the 800 guy probably didn't do anything outside of work or wrote crappy essays?

Then again, there was that example by Columbia of the guy who copied 1/2 an essay from Montauk's book and still got in... go figure!

Great posts krip and aub.

The tone of the entire presentation was positive. Mr. Caleel also encouraged people to get onto the student2student forums and ask any questions they may have. He also said that once you submit your app it is printed out and reviewed by two members of the adcom. The apps are sorted into two piles, interview and ding. Then they are sent to him where he reviews all the apps and takes some people from the ding pile and puts them into the interview one and vice versa. Once your interview is finished the interviewer types up his/her notes and they too are put in your app file. Finally, the apps are reviewed one more time and Mr. Caleel puts together a class profile for the dean.

Imagine this in an essay:
I believe I will add to the Wharton community my ability to date and scmooze effortlessly with wild 20-something U-penn undergrads. Whether at the library, or the living quaters or for that matter, anywhere on the U-Penn campus, I can be counted on to add significantly to the 'wild' factor.

anybody check out the Print feature in ApplyYourself? the print feature causes the line breaks to disappear leaving text in a jumble. do you guys think the adcom uses this feature?
