Parisa traveled from her home to the gym by the same route on two consecutive days. On the first day, she jogged 3/5 of the distance at 12 km/h and walked the remaining distance at 6 km/h. On the second day, she jogged at 12 km/h for 3/5 of the time and walked at 6 km/h for the remaining time. If the total time on the first day was 3 minutes longer than on the second day, what is the distance from her home to the gym?

Let the distance be D.

Express the time on the first day in terms of D:

Time on First Day = (3/5D)/12 + (2/5D)/6 = (7/5D)/12 = 7D/60

Express the time on the second day in terms of D:

3 mins = 3/60 hour

Time on Second Day = 7D/60 - 3/60 = (7D - 3)/60

Plug that expression into R × T = D equation for second day:

[12 × 3/5 × (7D - 3)/60] + [6 × 2/5 × (7D - 3)/60] = D

Solve:

[12 × 3 × (7D - 3)/12] + [6 × 2 × (7D - 3)/12] = 25D

3(7D - 3) + (7D - 3) = 25D

28D - 12 = 25D

D = 4

A. 2 km
B. 4 km
C. 6 km
D. 8 km
E. 12 km

Correct answer: B
